Thought I would throw up a couple of pictures of my version of the BHAF for my Mega Cab. Ordered the filter (Wix #42790) from fleetfilters.com for 29 bucks, Won a AFE torque tube from Ebay for 80 Bucks and it came with the tubing seals and clamps. Bought the 4" single plenum (Spectre Industries poweradder # 9849) from Pepboys for 45 bucks and it is also available from Summit for the same price. Got the outerware (#WR3325-105 / 20-1085-107) from primerides.com for 37 bucks. Made the heat shield myself from stainless sheet metal (approx. 20 bucks) and put it all together. Seems to work pretty good and the EGT's dropped by 100-150 degrees from the stock airbox. :D

That's creative and original!

I like it. I may have to duplicate that for my next truck, or better yet, place an order with you when you start marketing them. (hint, hint)

Looks good, have you checked it when it rains or snows to see if water is getting to it? I have a AFE magnum force which looks similar, I had to make a shield to cover the grill in front of the filter because water and snow find their way through and covered my outware. I made the shield from a black rubber, you cannot notice it from the outside, it is attached to the backside of the grill.

Thanks, I was out running around in the rain last week and so far I have not noticed any water intrusion to the filter. I have not experienced any snow with it as of yet but next week I will check it out when I make the trip from San Diego Back to South Dakota and I'll let you know.

Thanks for the comments and if anybody is interested I can make copies of the template for the heat shield. Wont be able to get them out until after new years though as I am in the middle of a move to Custer South Dakota. If anyone would like to get a copy of the template get back with me in Jan.

Anybody that needs a copy of the template let me know, I have scanned it into a word document and can e-mail it to you, sorry it took so long!

Rwiess,

Your design does look really good. I want to run a BHAF myself and was thinking of making something similar if you do not mind.

But I have a couple of questions before I start gathering parts,

Did you have to make a hole in the end of the filter for that hold rod to pass through? And if you did how did you prevent anything getting around the filter?

Instead of the torque tube I was wanting to run a "cool blue hose" so do you happen to remember the Outlet OD of that Spectre Adapter that you purchased?

Thanks for all the help!!

Yes I did have to put a hole in the BHAF for the hold rod to pass through, I used a foam o-ring at the bottom to seal it up. The Outlet OD of that Spectre Adapter was the same size as my AFE torque tube (4 inches if I remember right). Good luck!

First off I would like to say kudos to you for sourcing that plenum. That is a cool piece. I had just order the parts to do mine with a cool blue hose and a 90 deg. elbow but your plenum is much cleaner/compact. I will be able to use everything I ordered except the elbow $40 after shipping#@$%! ouch!!! I was out test fitting the filter tonight and came up with some questions for you.

1. I see you cut one of the mounting tabs off of the battery box. Did you cut off both to get the tray down to just above the air-conditioner line?

2. I take it the round piece on the top of the plenum is a nut. What diameter and pitch of rod is needed to thread into this nut?

3. With the filter positioned the way you have it did the plenum match up to the torque tube perfectly elevation wise or did you have to finesse the tube unlet up to meet it?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Answer to questions From bwall7116:

1. No I only had to cut the tab closest to the engine, I left the outboard one in place.

2. The Nut is a standard aircleaner nut also from Spectre Industries sold at Pep Boys or Autozone for about 5 bucks and it is the standard size and thread pitch as a 4BBL Carb aircleaner stud.

3. When I finished and started to put it all together I was amazed that the plenum and the torque tube matched almost perfectly, they migh have been off by no more than a quarter of an inch in height.

Good luck !

RWeiss just a couple more questions

1. I assume all BHAF filters are the same size. Mine measures 10 3/8in diameter by 10 5/8in tall without the neck and 11 7/8 with the neck. If you happen to remember could you verify that your filter is this size? I cannot see any way to get mine as low as yours. In the picture of yours it looks like the top of the filter with out the neck is flush with the top of the fender and I am having hood clearance issues. Is yours sitting almost on top of the intercooler tube?

2. Is your filter sitting perfectly vertical or is it on an angle? In the picture it looks like the side of the filter is touching the fender but if mine were like that it would be on top of the AC line and would sit up higher.

3. Have you had any issues with moisture on the filter yet? I've heard that a box only decreades the air temp around the filter by 5 deg so if you have not experienced any problems I think I will just build a tray.

Thanks again I know that I am being rather detailed.

If you bought the same part number mentioned in the post then yours is the same as mine, your dimentions sound the same. My box is sitting on the intercooler tube and my AC line runs just under my box on the fender side. The filter is about 3/4 of an inch below the fender lip and about a 1/4 of an inch from it. I did not have to raise the hood but the plenum nut does touch the hood insulation. I have not had any moisture problems and if it does get wet, the outerwear keeps it from soaking through to the filter. My box has the shield from the engine side to keep heat and moisture from getting to the filter. The air intake from the front of the truck pushes fresh air right into my filter box. Good luck.

Part Detail

Summit sells the spectre 9849 for $75,

great find on that piece, my afe is gittin yanked out.

thanks

edit- I just saw the dates of the first post. eye opener on inflation
