I was reading the thread about the little black cavern on the earlier 2nd gens which wasn't good for anything but a gauge holder. My beef is, my 98. 5 had this really handy overhead compartment (didn't have the electical info center some of ya'll have) which would hold a myriad of things. MY '01 has this thing which is supposed to be a sunglasses holder (which won't hold sunglasses unless you wear the aviator/flat style) which i use to hold a 2nd keyring (trailer, gates, etc. . ) and a GARAGE DOOR OPENER compartment(didn't get the "info center" on this truck, either). How many people have a garage they can park a 3500 4x4 in? (no, not a shop or barn, i mean a real residential garage). Has anybody figured out an alternate use for this thing.

(I plan on going to a junkyard and finding a console like the one I had in my 98... . one of these days)

tv

I'm thinking about getting rid of the sun glasses holder and putting a flip down screen with the dvd player for the kids. Already have the screen it's gray and matches my interior. I know my sun glasses don't fit in the holder. But I can fit my truck in the garage so I do use the opener. Good luck.

 :D

My vote for the most useless thing goes to the stock jack. I highly recommend that you give yours a try before you really need it. I replaced the POS with a 3 ton hydraulic.

Most usless: Stock jack. The plastic retaining ring broke and it's a real charm to try to keep the extension engaged.

I fit my truck in the garage once! Couldn't get out of the truck!

If you get an upper console from a '98,then you'll have to get a '98 healiner too. The '99-01 consoles have a bigger hole in the headliner.

My truck will never see a garage. I have a 6-disc CD changer under the seat but it is not the kind that plugs directly into the factory radio. It has the FM band modulator. What I did was mount the CD control panel inside the garage door cavity on the backside of the little door. It's cool, when I'm not listening to CD's, just close the door and it's out of sight.

I agree. What an idiotic idea to replace a perfectly good catch-all. I don't even have a garage. A sunglasses case? Get real. My sunglasses hang from the visor like my wife's do on the other side. I asked the salesman if there was an optional replacement. I even offered to pay for something different. He said that's all there is. I used the spot in my '98 to hold my pocket sized work related papers. Come on DC, get a grip... What next, a make-up kit holder where the receiver used to be?

Here is my favorite so far..

The cup holders on the 6sp floor console are totally useless from a driver's standpoint.

Second would be the hood release. What purpose does it serve? I rarely have to use it. :D

I go with the cup holders. How useless is that? Reach over to grab for my cup and I go outa sight. I bought a smoothie couple of weeks after the truck arrived.

As for the dark hole in the dash, works great for 4-5 CD's. I ain't got a changer yet, so that's what I use is for.

I guess my sunglasses fit just fine. What's a garage door opener? Or is that something that comes standard on the BMW?!

I use the garage door opener, but my truck doesn't fit... it just saves me a walk around back sometimes.

I'll go with the sunglasses holder as useless. Haven't opened it twice in two years.

Sunglasses Holder you ARE the... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Weakest Link~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Good Bye!

The thing that really sucks about the SG holder is that its doesnt even fit most sunglasses. You have to have cheap POS "flat" sunglasses that will even fit. What a waist of plastic.

Cobra over the cavern

Hey guys:

The cavern in the dash on the standards has to be the worst, although it did make it easy to decide where to install my CB. Covers it great.

I'm one of the folks who has the flat aviator sunglasses so I do get some use out of the overhead console. The Oakleys live in the center console though.

One thing I've been thinking about adding is some interior lights under the dash. Would be real nice to be able to see the floor at night.

Finally, I had opportunity to vote on some feature upgrades to DC a few years ago. Neatest one was for tilt out tool storage compartments on the lower part of the side of the bed, just like on the old ford super camper specials. Remember proposed cost $120. Do it, DC!

Cheers, Wiredawg

Truly the most useless is.......

After much thought I believe the most useless item that came with my truck is the dealers name, address and phone number. :p

Useless

It's a tossup between the cupholders and the middle seat/console. I solved both with a custom aluminum console with usable cupholders that I made.

useless stuff

Unlike several that have mentioned the useless sunglass holder and cavern in the dash. The sunglass storage both my wife and I use for sunglasses, mine are clip on and hers are small so both fit without any effort. The cavern in the dash works for either my large pager or the Nextel I carry when driving. Actually for me the accessories have worked pretty well for me including the garage door opener storage. Most all jacks in the vehicles are pretty worthless these days. I have been lucky enough to only have to change a tire on the road two or three time in the last 30 years of driving. I guess my main beef on this truck would be the worthless drip bottle under the hood. I just got rid of this ness maker this weekend by running a hose down back andr over the front crossmember. And gee, my swb actually fits in my garage too:D A lwb would just fit but would have to leave the door up to get around the rear of it to go in the house. The swb leaves about 1 1/2 feet when the door is down so one of my main reasons for getting the swb.

One feature I just thought of that kind of irritates me is the drivers window one touch all the way down. That is a feature I wish I could change. I never need the window all the way down on a one-touch of the button.

In Defense Of The Holder

I like the sun glass holder, I use it to keep my reading glasses handy. It is a lot easier to grab my glasses out of it instead of going into every thing with me looking for them when I need them in a hurry. You young guys will know what I mean in about twenty years, fair warning.
