Are We Ready For War?

Where is it?

What are your thoughts about these - does anybody have one. She will only drive it in town, it'll get very few miles. They have great reviews - but I want other's recommendations.

Thanks

Thirty two years is long enough for her to wait for a Subaru!

Seriously, I don't know anything about them, Subarus that is. Got one of those wifes, had her for a while but not as long as you've had yours.

Congratulations.

Can't go wrong.

We've had several Subarus and they are very well built and reliable, if not terribly exciting. The engines are pretty bullet-proof as is the AWD system. Just don't expect it to act like a truck.

You're a very lucky man that she only wants a Subaru.

I've been married only 10 months and she wants the frickin' moon:(

They are very good cars in cooler weather. You see them everywhere up in Alaska with over 300,000 miles on them with little or no problems. But in Nevada they blow head gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets often. About 60% of these need new heads because the crack at the exhaust manifolds. Living in Wash. they would be great.

Congradulations on the 32 years.

I remember when My dad had one ... . (79 Yellow GL) when we lived in Vermont and that thing went 189,000 miles before the body finaly fell apart (Rusty Jones Era) + Vermont salt = carnage. Mom had a legacy that ran forever ..... Brother in law had a GL sedan that went 297,000 miles (ONLY TWO CLUTCHES!!!!) I Love My WRX (Bombed allready too ... . wicked fast!) anyways the new forresters are from what I hear and driving the last year's model vertually the answer to SUV/MiniVan question.

I have worked on the Subaru ad campaigns for the last 3 years. We've filmed them in the mud, te snow, the desert and pavement. I would never have considered a Subaru until I started working with them and witnessed the abuse they can take from the stunt drivers. I don't think you can go wrong, especially with the Forrester.

From working on them, all i can say is they are good cars with one drawback,the95-99's i worked on are all leakers, not new,but get 50-60K on thrm, and they all leak oil out the oil pan,and rear main seal. . Ive seen a lot of subaru's with oil leaks, they are difficult,if not impossible to fix permanently too,the leaks seem to return in a yr or so. Other than this, they are great cars from what ive seen,Id buy one for sure, but id have a mat under it if i parked it in the garage, once it was out of warranty. Then a can of brake cleaner and a rag when you change the oil,to keep the underside from building up with goo. I hate leakers,Ive got a fetish about them,I cant have leaks(even slow ones,0n anything)without trying to fix them,or constanly wiping up the oil or whatever,so it wont build up with junk, and dust.

My wife of 36 years has a Outback and it is very dependable, has around 100K on it. Only thing I don't like about it is where the cup tray is. It allowed a very full drink to spill on the radio and now the radio quits once and awhile.

A gal at work has a '01 Forester and is happy with it except for the price and a crappy interior she says started falling apart day one, cupholder, visor clips and ashtray are all broken.

My sis has one and it just keeps going and going, 50+ miles one way to work in rush hour and no problems!

32 years! You must be giving her what she wants... so why stop now!

My wife of 19 yrs loves her VW Passat station wagon. It's not AWD, but gets 30+ mpg w/ her driving it. It's got the 1. 8L turbo and hauls a$$. We looked at Subarus and Volvos too. She decided that the VW was for her. She thinks that whoever designed the dash lighting must have been listening to Jimi Hendrix at the time. Good luck w/ what ever you get.

Subaru

hammersly, if she gets it just watch for a rainbow tag or sticker to appear. if that should happen, BAD, BAD!!!! (my OWMBO looked at the forester seriously, recently. eventually it got down to, of all things, a diesel beetle, and a lexus RX300. the lexus won--barely. she still looks at the beetles and drools).

We looked at them after my wife rolled her Ford Explorer. No leg room for me so we picked up another Exp off lease. Explorer has enough leg room but not much for the shoulders. Big thing is, she is happy with it.

It has to be age related. Something like Alzheimers.

My dad had a Subaru. Thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But, he sold it. Got a Dodge D50 instead. It had more power, rode better and got more MPG than the subaru did. No more of those things came around our place (whew, hated it).

You KNOW you lacked power when motorhomes passed you on the interstate and you were at WOT.

Hammersley,

Like others have said, you can't go wrong with a Subaru, especially in the Pacific Northwest. My wife had a 1999 Forester, and she loved it! She now has an Outback with the 6 cyl. If you asked her, I'm sure she'd tell you she enjoyed the Forester more than the Outback (but she does like the extra power from the 6 cyl). The drivability, visibility, dependability are all great. Are you looking to get one soon? I know the new body style will be out around May. Nice looking update and a few more features. If you’re also willing to put it off for 6 mo. , you may be able to get one at invoice (no dickering) through IMBA

Good luck, -Ken
