tach wire

Does your truck not have a tach? If it does not, you will have to put an additional pickup senser on the truck because the factory on is ECM. driven. You might also look at the factory repair manual's wiring schematic to find which wire in the dash plug is for the tach. I have seen trucks wired for all of the options even if they aren't installed.
 
According to my 02 service manual, the engine speed data is transmitted from the PCM to the instrument cluster via the CCD bus. This means there is no wire to tap for use with an external tachometer as the information is just a message packet on the CCD bus. It may be different for your model year.
