Has anyone heard good or bad about Mystic JT-8 from cato oil co. ? I've been using it for 100K miles with no problems. Its 15-50 is popular here in south texas. I'm new to the register and never hear anyone compare it here on the website or the newsletter... . LS

Far be it from me to contribute to any oil thread ;) but yes, it's fairly popular around here as well. It is a fairly "regional" oil, not that nationwide so you won't hear that much about it but it's a pretty good oil.

I have been running the JT-8 15W40 for 140k+ miles with no problems whatso ever. Lets see, 11 quarts every 10,000 miles that means I have ran what 154 quarts of oil through the truck?

I am from oklahoma, don't know where else you can get it.

Its very popular in Oklahoma. Atwoods has it all over the place in Shawnee. We used the tractor hydraulic fluid and the red tractor oil for ever and ever. I never used the engine oil they sell.

Its got a good price I know that and as fast as our tractors leaked fluid we needed something to put back in that would not break the bank.

They sell it up here in ND at home of economy.

Morphious,

I see your going 10,000 mile oil changes. I use a different brand of oil but was wondering if you change your filter some time between oil changes? just curious as I plan on going extended drains.

Ron,

This point got buried deep in the discussions of all the recent oil threads, but if you are considering extended drains I highly recommend you get an oil bypass filter. I like the single bypass style over the dual bypass because it maintains "factory" oil pressure. Users are reporting good results with several different brands. If your goal is to go longer between service intervals, then go with a spin-on or oilguard style filter, because the TP filters require more frequent element changes. Secondly, with the bypass, most drivers can go 10,000 between filter changes (oil analysis recommended).

Well, guess I need to clarify myself. I do change oil at least every 10,000 miles. What I mean by atleast is how much work the truck had done in those miles. If I am hauling hay or anything else where I am working the truck hard (18,000lbs of hay on 24' gooseneck trailer), then I change the oil every 5,000 miles. But when I am doing strictly highway driving like I normally do, then I change it every 10,000 miles (or about once a month) whichever comes first. Yes, I do put around 10,000 miles a month on my truck, with my kids being on the east coast and me living in Oklahoma. I use wix filters, along with the Mystic oil, and use Lucas in my fuel just about every tank. The longer change intervals are not for everyone, I don't pull trailers often, and my daily commute is 80 miles one way on the turnpike, no stop and go traffic. I use mystic, one because it helps keep the American oil field going (no, this is not made from foreign oil as foriegn oil is a dry/sour oil and is only really good for gas). Two, I have had good luck with it on my tractors (both are diesels). Yes, the oil is made by citgo which is hdqtr'd in Tulsa.

WOW!

I like your comments because they point out something that often gets lost in the heated oil debates. Not everybody has the same needs; we all place different demands on our trucks/oils. And with all that "seat" time, I'm betting your remaining hours are very precious to you, so extending the drains makes sense FOR YOU. I "only" rack up about 6000 miles per month, and I know I feel that way.

Can't really miss it, it is in 4" tall letters with a script that looks like a little kid wrote it. Although I am in NC right now and don't know where I will land a job, right now I have thing pending in Ohio, DC, NC, Tulsa, VA and PA. Hopefully one of them will work out.

I should have pointed out that when I talk extended drains I mean that I plan on going 8,000 miles with 4,000 mile filter change. I plan on switching to a full group IV synthetic 5-40 weight.

The reason I plan on switching to a group IV 5-40 year around is due to the climate around here and only towing in the summer I was wasteing oil by changeing more often to compensate for temp changes and then towing.

This way I figure I can change oil every 8,000 miles with filter changes every 4,000 miles or change oil and filters every six months which ever comes first.
