I don't seem to be able to find a way to remove my initial and last name from posts I make. How do I do this? I really, really, don't want my name displayed to the whole world!

Is this really needed?

Before I get the blow torch, hear me out.

The powers that be have it at their fingertips to identify who is who on the TDR. The nice features of the new software make it real easy to contact each other, even without exposing our email address.

What is the point of showing / exposing for the entire internet to see, our entire names??

This is not about calling someone on the other coast or across town a 'goat' from the anonymous handle. That should not be tolerated, EVER.

This is more about avoiding those who love to prey on the internet. The only limited protection you have on the internet is to never never expose your true identity and never never give the 'dark side' an edge up. This in not the groanings of a paranoid person but rather the sounds of warnings from someone who knows exactly what pains the 'dark side' will go to in the search of an identity to swipe.

I deleted the rest of this post in honor of the TDR's decision to review the names policy!

Thank you!

I agree with David!

I think David is 100% on-target. I am NOT concerned with the members here having my last name, it's those who prey on information. Our names SHOULD be available to members only!

There has to be a middle ground

Some more thoughts:

I know that the hot head approach will only get one an invitation to move on. That really is not going to work, so members please don't take my posting as an invitation to flame the senior mgmt. I realize that they see this name thing as a means to an end for many mgmt issues that they have had in the past.

We have a ton of computer guys in these trucks, so lets give the mgmt another way to accomplish their goal without giving us up to the internet.

My first idea is to either have a registered alias of some minimum matching letters which the membership office has the only editing control over (i. e. no changing it every 2 days). In may case I would be happy with having to give up the first three letters of my last name.

My second idea is to have a button 'who am I' that will only open after you type in your member name and password. No cookies on that and the request for identity is forwarded as a private message to the 'target' person to encourage communication. At the same time the message is fowarded to the 'target', a box would come up to tell the requestor at a minimum exactly who the 'target' is.

The first sounds easy but the second might have more functional usage.

I encourage the TDR mgmt to turn off the name thing until a middle ground solution can be found.

Please!

==========

6/9 they turned it off, thank you!!

However its done, I want my name taken off where it's viewable by the general public. I don't mind members getting it, but I don't want it displayed to the general public.

David_vt, love the little picture you are killing me!

TDR ADMIN, There are some very valid concerns here regarding the last name in every post. I for one don't think it is such a good idea to make the info availible to members even. For $35 bucks the EPA,DC or ???? can become a member and thereby have access to last names.

Count me as another vote to eliminate the last name view on each post.

I'm still out-of-the-box stock, but should I decide at some future time to "modify" my vehicle, I don't need to make any easier for DC to void my warranty.

I fully understand that the administrators need access to this info in order to keep things civil, but everyone else does not need, and should not have open access to my info.

BTW. . other than this point, kudos to all for the new updates.

I pulled the following from the TDR guidelines which were modified today according to the header. Note the text from 1. 0:

Each subscriber's last name (as it appears on your TDR subscription) will be posted below your username when posting to the TDR Discussion Forums. [\B]

I would presume this to be the answer to everyone's concern. i. e. "we don't care, this is the new policy"

The TDR Web Site’s Terms

and Conditions of Participation

Updated: June 6, 2001

Welcome to the Turbo Diesel Register (TDR) Web Site! We trust you will find the site both informative and fun, but first things first: By using our web site, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions. If you do not wish to comply with these terms and conditions, you shouldn’t request posting privileges on the TDR’s web site. Please note that we reserve the right to change these guidelines at any time, and your continued use of the web site indicates that you agree to comply with any new or modified guidelines. So remember to review the TDR’s posting guidelines from time to time.

1. 0 Username and Access (please read this guideline carefully). Subscribers may select a username of choice (all usernames will be screened for appropriateness - no profanity or vulgarity, etc. ). Each subscriber's last name (as it appears on your TDR subscription) will be posted below your username when posting to the TDR Discussion Forums. We want to know Joe Smith for the positive contributions he makes to the forum. Conversely, we have found that posts made under an assumed "handle" have a tendency to be less than civil. Each new active vendor/commercial subscriber (account) must have his or her business name incorporated into his or her signature block.

By requesting posting privileges on the TDR’s web site, you certify that all information you provide during the registration process is accurate.

Here is an exchange between HEMIDart and Steve St. Laurent 'the lead moderator' in a thread called 'senior member'. It is pretty clear from Steve's comment that this was planned and any bugs have been "corrected" so that the 'real' names will appear. If you believe the guidelines as they have rewritten them, this is their [TDR's] boldfaced intimidation tactic to prevent "less than civil" posts.

[from HEMIDart]

I think senior member is gone now. Seems it was replaced with our real name's. GREAT

[from Steve]

That was a mistake guys, it was supposed to be your real names from the beginning. Something went wrong and it's been corrected, there were other strange names issued to some as well. It will take a little time to get all the bugs worked out - please bear with us.

Hey David, you are a goat. LOL

Never called anyone a goat before, kind of fun! Gosh, and my last name did not prevent me from doing it neither.

Ditto on your suggestions David VT, BOMB this baby!

Uh-Oh, maybe someone will, "report this post to a moderator":D

I dont like my name on the net either. If it was viewable to members only, I guess that would be acceptable. ??

I'm having a big enough problem with someone using my S. S. #, I dont need/want to give out more info than needed.

With all the high tech gadgets out there, this is unnecessary.

David_VT: The birthday deal is totally optional. You can just not enter it at all or enter only the month and day. The 'fine member' you posted about wants us to know his birth date!

I just noticed our last names are gone! Yea, Yea, Yea!!!!! About time...
