I had my lift pump replaced at 99,000 under warranty , I now have 133,000 miles on it and I know its only a matter of time before this one pukes. So heres the question, my friend owns a Napa store and sells a universal fuel pump, one wire hook up that grounds through the 2 bolt mount, pumps 7psi. Would this be enough psi or not enough to help the stock lift pump survive? Its alot cheaper than some of the replacement systems I've read about, under $100. 00. Any thoughts ?

Should be fine if it is rated for use with diesel, and it will help the stock LP. But you can get a Carter 8psi pump from Summit for $89, so the $100 price tag doesn't sound like a deal maker to me given the unknowns of a seldom-used part.

Maybe some other members have experience with this NAPA pump.

The 4061 does not work as well or as long as the stocker..... Many have tried, many have failed.

The Carters you buy from Summit racing etc won't be a direct bolt in replacement as the inlet/outlet ports are probably 3/8" NPT or something like that. The OEM pumps have M12x1. 5mm O-Ring ports for use with banjo bolts. Looks are the same... but both plumbing and electrical connections are different.

If you plan on keeping a spare in the toolbox for a roadside repair... make sure it has the proper ports.

I'll toss my $. 02 in here.

My original lift pump died at ~45K miles. I replaced it with the same pump from Cummins (part # 3990105 as I recall), and a couple weeks later, I added the Carter 4601 pump in series with the Cummins pump. That was in April 2002, and as of today I have 98K on the truck, as well as a fuel pressure gauge. I have had zero additional problems so far... . But I also bought 2 of the Cummins pumps, and carry the second one in my tool box as a spare.
