I've been looking for a steering box for my 2001 2500 4x4, but Napa only has one part number for my truck and it lists it as a 4. xx turn lock-to-lock box. I had him check different years and the '98 lists a different number with 3. xx turns. Is the 98 compatible with my truck? Rockauto also shows different part numbers for the two years but no details.

I don't know this for a fact, but I'd guess they use one number to fit a number of OEM units. . We offer HD pumps and gears for Class 5 and larger and often one aftermarket number will replace 8-10 OE numbers... on these trucks, they usually run the same oil in the pump as the engine uses, so one common oil fits the bill... .

We have shown that on HD use a HD oil filter using the same filter that the truck uses will more than triple the life of the pump and gear... the filter keeps the dirt out as well as adds up to 1. 5 qts of extra oil, thus allowing the system to run cooler...

At engine oil changes the service guy changes the oil filter on the pump and gear...

Almost all light duty gears have some sort of filter in the pump... either a screen or filter like an auto transmission might have... its a wise thing to see if you have such a filter and service it every 75K-100K miles...

Get the brand of pump and do a search of the manufacturer and his service recommendations. . Often one pump will have 10 different brackets available on light duty applications and might service several applications. .

I'm sure it will bolt in OK. The only difference may be the ratio but I've never read anything about it being different for '98. I do know that the 2wd and 4wd boxes are different (I hate the lousy 4X4 'progressive' ratio) but that they will interchange also. I've got a 1/2 ton 2wd box waiting to be installed and '01 2500/3500 4X4 pitmann arm fits on it.

we have a old school local guy who actually does a better than new rebuild on them, nothing goes on the shelf till its perfect, Red-Head Steering Gears, Seattle WA - Red-Head Steering Gears Home

most shops do a half azz job and resell them, not this guy, we have used him for years on all makes of rigs, I have one of his boxes in my '98 now and it works nice. I never asked about turns lock to lock just told him I had a '98 12V 4x4 box and he knew what I needed. his prices are real fair I think.
