Hi, I have been looking for narrower tires for my truck. I currently have 285/75/16's and would like to go to something along the lines of 255/85/16. The handling is getting worse on my truck even with all the new things I have had put on, and I'm hoping the wore out 285's are a big culprit. I have a leveling kit, not sure if the 255's will look too small, anybody run these?

I've been running 255-85-R16 Toyo M-55s on my 2500 for a long time. I can't say enough good things about these tires in this size. I have levelling coils on my front end and they look good. I guess if there is anything semi-bad to say it would be cost and ride quality; they aren't cheap and they are burly. Realistically, neither of those are too bad in my mind... you get what you pay for and these last me over 50k miles per set with rough treatment and I don't mind compromising some ride quality for real HD tires. Don't use balancing beads with these; they're too heavy.

I have a 3rd gen, but went from 285's to 255's and couldn't be happier. I am really liking this tire size.

I have toyo 255/85/16 and they have 50k on them right now. The center treads are starting to get shallow but I understand that the M55's have an extra ply for punction resistance and that is why the tread is so shallow in the center. The outside treads still have a lot of tread left. I really wish they would not lay on the extra layer and the tread was the same depth all the way accross the tire. They have been great tires; 50k is great durability for me. I will dump them at 60k...

kscheffler: I hear you. I could run the M55s longer too, but the centers do tend to wear out. That leads to two bad things on my truck: crappy winter performance and death wobble. My truck will death wobble when the front tires start to wear out. Not worth the scare to me. And the same goes for bad snow performance.

A friend of mine from Toronto, Canada, who is a TDR member, always gets the Toyo M55's for his 3rd gen Dodge 2500 in a 255/80/17 size. He gets great mileage and they work good for him in the deep Canadian snow.

As of January, there are only four manufacturers of 255/85r16, that I know of. BFGoodrich in their KM/MT tread, Dunlop in their Radial Mud Rover, and Cooper's Mastercraft, Tempra, Telstar, and Roadmaster Line of tires. Cooper offers an all terrain tire, as well as their M/T. Remington Tire has been discontinued shortly after the first of the year. MSRP is as follows: BFGoodrich $215, Dunlop Mud Rover $186, Mastercraft $156. Toyo M/Ts $289, M55 Toyos $335. Cooper $244. They're out there, albiet hard to find at times. They're only made in short runs. They're kept alive by Land Rovers and Jeeps, which need narrower tires. I run them dualled on my older Dodges, and don't let the 8ply scare you. Check weight carrying capacity compared to your 10 plys before being too judgmental... ...

Hmm... Toyo doesn't list that size? I looked and looked for it, and checked with several Toyo dealers, the only 255/80/17 I could find on the market right now is the BFG KM2.

This is part of an email I received from my friend a few days ago, who lives near Toronto. He has an 03 Dodge CTD, 2500;

"Put the new tires on the Dodge last week. I stayed with the Toyo M55's like I had last time. They seem to work well on the truck and give me a full 3 years of use, so thats hard to beat. "

Can you ask him to verify the size please.

That would be a good size! I think a 275/75 would suit me better, but either would be killer.

BFG has a 275/70 as of late.

One of my '97s with 255/85R16s dualled. The Remington's are discontinued. They also tended to have a wider profile than other brands, so the Cooper's don't touch. These are touching as there's a lot of weight on the truck at the moment.

Go to nexttag.com enter tire size. I checked about 2hrs ago they are there with prices and dealers. You guys have got me thinking, I could use them in the back as I am running 4. 10s. Hope this helps you guys find them. The 255-85r-16 Toyo was 235. 00.
Good luck Capt Phil
