Talking to a Cheby fan

Anyone played with Biodiesel?

Caught something today on financial page of the paper --- One of the $$ companies has reduced the bond status on Navistar to Junk Rating. What will this do to Ford?

I think Navistar in bad shape is bad for all of us. When they are financially strong they have more money and resources to fight BS legislation that would impact is all (read emissions for one example). They also have more money to spend improving their products forcing all of the other manufacturers to do the same giving all of us a better product no matter what brand is in the driveway. Competition is a good thing, I hope they get it turned around soon.

Cummins isn't doing too well, either.

In the last few days they've announced 500 job cuts and an earnings adjustment. They were working with Navistar on a joint project that got canned.

It's a bad time for all the major diesel engine manufacturers.

Jack's got it right!

If any here are happy to hear about Navistar doing poorly, they haven't been paying enough attention to the SEVERE bad times Cummins is going thru! As entertaining as it is to tease owners of other brand trucks, the actual reality of Navistar, Cummins or ANY of the former heavy-hitter US diesel manufacturers going under SHOULD be VERY sobering to us ALL!

We're losing WAY too much production ability overseas - an excellent recent example was displayed recently when President Bush promised to sell some submarines to Taiwan, but was rebuffed by the European members of NATO and the UN - and they backed up their non-support by pointing out that the diesel engines WE use in our subs are actually designed and manufactured in Europe! In other words, WE *can't* sell subs to Taiwan, because Sweden (I think it was) won't build the diesel engines for us to build those subs around!

We've GOT to STOP our increasing reliance on FOREIGN BASED sources for the stuff WE buy and use in this country - or sooner than we wanna think about, THEY will be imposing punishing blockades and sanctions against US to get their way, just as WE do Iraq, Iran, Cuba and others...

Actually, the last US diesel/electric boat was the Blueback, christened in 1959. All subs since then have been nucs.

Are you referring to the auxiliary diesel engines on current nucs maybe?

Trust me, if we really wanted to sell nuclear attack subs to Taiwan, the fact that Sweden refuses to build the aux diesels for them wouldn't hold up the deal for a second.

Rumor has it that a new diesel engine has been built that is "quieter" than a reactor and these engines are being tested for use in subs. I can't verify it but I had the discussion with a gentleman at the US SOCOM in Tampa last week. That is where all the new technology is displayed for use by Special Operations and the US Armed Forces in general. I am curious as to whether or not this is true. Again this is an unsubstantiated rumor

Alan the real advantage for the diesel electrics was how quiet they were when on batteries but real slow. I cant imagine a diesel being quiet enough for the sonar wars. have you been drinking with guys with classified info again!!!!!! Give those Navy guys a couple of drinks and they spill their guts :)

Nooooooo. I wouldn't drink with any of MY old shipmates. I was not privy to what is being experimented with. You know as much as I know, now. As you know, experiments are going on all the time. They had a turbine powered motorcycle last year as well as a turbine powered jet drive. The M/C was 200 hp. I don't remember about the boat motor but it was high output (like our trucks :D ) Anyway, the manufacturer was claiming on the boat turbine, a 30% fuel savings. Maybe the new sub diesel will be called a Duramax. Who knows. By the way, there was a new Mercedes type Jeep with a 50 cal mounted in the rear cargo area. That thing pulled up beside me after the show, indoors and I could not hear it running. I smelled the burned diesel and that is all. He shut it down because he had to wait for the aisle to clear and all I ever heard out of that thing was the starter engaging when he started it back up. That's quiet.

Dunno Mike - it's just what was in major news stories a few months back after Bush made promises to Taiwan... Maybe Bush was speaking of some lower class subs than our own nuclear powered jobs?

Still, gotta LOVE the "support" from our allies - the ones that run to the USA with their hands out when THEY want something FROM us, but make threats AGAINST us when we ask something from THEM in return...

Thank GOD for the current administration, who continue to support an "America FIRST" agenda - I'm dead TIRED of hearing whiners in this country wanting to reshape the USA more like Europe...

I *thought* the establishment of this country was begun to get us AWAY from European influence and politics...
