NE1 heard about re-flashing ECU when changing to RV275's?

I just got back from a local (but very highly recommended via the TDR) diesel shop from dropping off my 275's.

I took'em there just to have them matched. Not that it will help performance much, unless one or more of them happens to be not performing too well. But I'm anal about them, I want to make sure their performing nominally.

Anyway, the guy there told me that I wouldn't get the full effect of the 275's unless I had the truck's ECU flashed to the RV 275 setting. This sounded reasonably true to me, but I'm not sure. Any opinions there? And has anyone else heard this?

The guy was honest, he told me that if I had the ECU reflashed for the 275's that it could be done by a D/C dealership (no way will I let D/C touch it), or by a Cummins service shop. But that doing so will void my warranty. This sounded true to me also.

2) Shouldn't I gain about 30 HP just by exchanging the stock ISB injectors for the 275's, without flashing the ECU for 275's?

3) If I did re-flash the ECU for the 275's, how much more, if any, would I gain? I'd like to know, even though I won't flash the ECU if my warranty will be voided (I have about 66,000 miles to reach the 100,000 mile mark).

4) I'll be adding the Edge EZ later on. Once the Edge EZ is added, what would happen to the engine performance if the ECU was flashed before or after the install of the Edge EZ? I'm asking cause I'm thinking that maybe the Edge EZ would work best with the original ISB 235 injector ECU program. Does that sound logical?

Thanks for the help.

I havent herd of that before? But would be interested in hearing more about it. If that were true then you should have to get reflashed on any injector upgrade. DC wouldnt do the reflash anyway it would most likely put you out of there "EPA zone". And yes they would void your warranty if they know you changed injectors.

The ecm used in a rv is different than our ecm.

the calibration for the rv 275 will not go into our ecm because of ecm part number.

the only effect that i could see, with him telling you that is

the rv 275 has 660 torque and the calibration will only allow 2500 rpm

. 02 $

oh yeah...

I forgot... the guy mentioned that the RV275 program was on the ECM, but that depending on the serial number on the ECM that the program may not be allowed. By him saying that, I don't know if he meant that a technician is not allowed to flash to the 275 program, or that electronically the program would not be attainable due to the ECM part/serial #.

Then again, I don't know if he would truelly know if the 275 program would really be in the ECM. Maybe it is, maybe its not... . I certainly don't know.

No matter what you do to increase engine HP your warrenty will be voided, yes DC can tell if you had a power module on and yes they can tell if the injectors have been changed and not by just flow testing either, there are other ways they can tell. DC or the dealer probably won't look for injector mods on a minor warrenty claim but on a major claim they will probably go over everything.

When I was at cummins haveing my truck checked over for low power issues the technician there showed me two other programs that would work in my ECM. I asked him to install the program with the most HP (don't remember the numbers, it was two years ago) He told me that cummins would get sued and probably loose there contract with DC if he did the install. I asked him to leave the machine hooked up and walk away and I would push the button, he said; I would like to but anyone else that scans the ecm can detect the new program and every program install programmer has a process number in it that leaves it's number and DC can tell who installed the program.

If this is the program you are talking about I do not know, all I know is there are other programs that can be installed in out ECM's.

reflash

I dont about the ECM reflashing but can give you a little performance info. My CTD is a 2001 with an edge ez and 275's with 4 inch exhausat. On the dyno it comes in at 273 hp and 645 lbft of torque. I think Im in the minor to meduim upgrade range in terms of power but it suits me. Hope the info will give you a base line. I run 265 75 with an auto and 3. 54 gears/

yessir...

Ronsram - I believe everything you've said.

kprice - Thanks for the info.

I spoke with the guy again because he called about being finished with my injectors. Asked him about the ECM reflash deal. He said he spoke to a buddy that worked at Cummins and found out that he was mistaken. The Cummins guy let him know that no Ram owners were (allowed to be) doing this. The Cummins guy said that the big truck guys were sometimes flashing their ECM's like this, and that's what the guy at the local shopping was remembering.

Anyway, I'm going to stick to my original plan - matched RV275's, an Edge EZ box, & straight piping my stock exhaust (remove the muffler, leave the resonator). That should give me about all the stock clutch will hold. Surely that'll be all I need. :D

Your clutch will hold a lot more than any 275hp!!!

You should be ok until 325-350 assuming you don't abuse it. With a little care an a steady foot you could milk it for 370 or so.

It will slip eventually but the aftermarket clutches are worth the $$$.

hmmm....

Most of the fellers I've heard on here say its the TQ that slips the clutch. I've always heard that the level of kprice's (645 lb-ft) is about all the stock clutch will hold. Any more than that and towing in direct drive and you can over-power the clutch. At least that's what I've heard.

And that's all the power I'm shooting for at this time. Will the stock clutch hold much more than that? I'd be happy at kprice's level. :D
