This is a place that you rent a bay either a open bay or with a lift. . A low lift or a 4-post lift.

The Wrench-It Center | Do-It-Yourself Vehicle Repair

Used the low lift to install the 5th wheel hitch on my truck. . It is 20 deg outside in Salt Lake City today. . so being in a heated shop is nice.

Cool place to do your own oil changes or whatever.

Pic with my silver truck when doing my hitch.

There used to be 3 places like that in Ann Arbor (back in the late 70's- early 80's and they were wonderful. They all seemed to close up though and I was told insurance was eating them alive. It would be nice to see some places like that again, esp. in areas of cold winter weather.

Ya we need to get rid of the trial lawyers that are killing this country and quit these stupid lawsuits that you I end up paying for. Public shops what a neat deal

Back in the mid 70's Shell Oil converted a number of their Houston service stations into convenience stores with the rental bays & tools- it was very popular, especially in areas where many lived in apartments & had no place to work on their vehicles. My understanding is that liability concerns caused them to shut down. :-(

I remember seeing that place right after they opened it on the news. I thought it was pretty cool at the time but gave it no more thought. Well, fast forward to about two weeks ago and my wife's car won't start. I gave it alot more thought then! I was trying to think of way to get the car over there so I wouldn't have to work in the cold and snow.

To bad it never happened, I'd like to see the inside of that place.

I've heard of dealerships dumping vehicles off of lifts. I wonder how often it happens
with do it yourselfers. I'm not sure I would insure them either.

Great idea... I like it. Wonder how they keep track of tools? Not so sure you would want someone in there who doesn't have basic hand tools they can bring with them.

Any idea on rental fees, curious to know what they get? Insuring the place might be a nightmare and what about all the bozo's that leave a big mess behind, I suppose a clean up person is on staff.

edit I see 12. 00 to 18. 00 hr depending no lift or a 4 poster. Hrmm 1hr min I suppose and a cc pre swipe maybe would get things going.

Yes, hour min. . And either a card hold or $100 deposit.

You can bring your own tools. I did. They have several identical 200 piece toolboxes with separators so accounting of tools is easy.

There are several workers and they keep a clean shop... In my pic, this place has been open for several months and it has been busy.

I plan on using this place to do my mag-hytec. Trans pan. They catch and recycle the oil for you.

The air force bases have places like that called auto hobby centers. There great for the guys that live in dorms and dont have a place to work. They run about $4 an hr for no lift and about $8 hr for a lift, and they have people there to help you out.

I was just about to say... I was in the USAF 77-81 and remember those, great place to get things done. I hope they can make this one work out.
