Just got a sale catalog from Northern Tool and Equipment Co. Just chock full of neat stuff, little of which I'll probably ever need, but still it's fun to look at 34. 8 HP diesel engines for sale etc. :)

This company has a lot of neat stuff, but let me tell you about my experience with them just this week.

They also operate as Northern Auto Supply. I received a catalog yesterday from Northern Auto Supply and found a welding helmet in it that I wanted more info on. I went to their website, www.northernautosupply.com and found the helmet on sale for $60. 00 less. I called to order and was quoted the higher price but had the order taker check and he then agreed that the lower price was correct.

Today, Tuesday, I received the catalog from Northern Tool. In comparing prices I find some differences between the two catalogs on the same item. They use the same base part number but identify each catalog with a suffix, such as -B966 or -A646. As an example, I found bead seating tool that was $10. 00 higher in one catalog than the other.

So, my point is that you should always check their web site to find out if an item is on sale. I would also suggest getting both catalogs so that you can see if the item is available for less from the other catalog. You just might save a few bucks.

Hope this helps someone!

Mail Order

Buyer beware - Harbor Frieght Tools does the same with their catalogs as what bigkid59 said for Northern Auto or Northern Tool

Yea, BV. they try to sell you a "membership" that supposedly gets you VIP treatment. They tell you that the membership will get such things as free shipping, special member only pricing, advance access to closeouts, etc.

The order taker I talked to Monday spent more time trying to sell me a $39. 99 two year membership than he did to answering my questions about the welding helmet.

I declined the offer. Several years ago I tried the "membership" thing with Harbor Freight. They promised a certain number of special offer each month. After not receiving the first "special offer" after two months had gone by, I demanded my money back. They finally credited my credit card.

I just wish these companies would shoot straight on such matters.

I got suckered into Northern Tool's members only club, every time I tried to order a members only low price item it was sold out. didn't take long for me to cancel. Don't do much business with Northern any more even though I received 5 catalogs last week. I've found I can get higher quality of the same items at competitive prices from Grainger, plus it usually arrives the next day.
