Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) need a code reader-where,what model?

wheres the best place to get a inexpensive code reader. after my last vp44 thought it might be a good idea to keep one of these in the truck.

What year is your truck? I think 2000's and I know 2001 and up cen be read without a reader by cycling the igniTon key from off to on-off-on-off-0n without bumping the starter, and read the odometer. All codes will scroll by and end with DONE.

Many auto parts outlets will read codes for free but though the Smarty isn't exactly cheap, it is a very fun code reader.

Stupid Zone stopped reading codes in Calif they can't get anybody smart enough to read em .

I got one at NAPA for 50 or 60 bucks. It is a AutoXray unit. Reads and resets codes, and will turn off MIL.
