No, I doubt my core is any good. Reman Cummins (doubt I will get core credit with the impact damage) or used and rebuild it at a local known machine shop are the two options I know of. Will need it "loaded" with valves and springs as mine are also no good.

Any other recommendations?

JD,
I've been following your other thread. I'm sorry to hear you're having to go through this. There's an '06 on ebay in Kansas.
I'm not sure if it would be the same head as your '03 but it might be worth talking to them and get the history on the head.

Good luck!

Cummims is pretty fair on core credit for operational damage. I will ask my distributor this morning to make sure.

I highly recommend the Cummims ReCon cylinder heads. I can't recall getting a bad one.

I am ok with a Cummims ReCon cylinder head and that's plan B. However:

I am told the distributors don't have much say on cores. So this is the risk we are trying to avoid. I would be surprised if that damage and then grinding off some of the damage is allowed as a core.

Basically cost. Cummins reman + core vs. can this trusted machine shop rework a used head for less. I feel lucky we even found a used head.

Shop has gotten bad Cummins remans and the exchange for them is a nightmare where you buy another and weeks go by before the bad part is refunded. (Not my issue, but, cutting the shop slack.)

Nice part is I have no schedule, but, do have a budget. So no rush to get it done and hopefully this can let the job turn out cheaper.

What will get you on the core is the attempted repair or as Cat calls it "Attempt to salvage".

Is the shop that you refer to Cummins Certified??? If an independent shop goes after OEM warranty it can be a waiting game.

If the shop is a certified Cummins location and places the claim through RapidServe it should not take too long for the claim to be paid.

But anyhow, if the used head you found passes muster at the machine shop you should be good to go.

That explains it. Shop was recommended by a Cummins dealer when I was looking for a place to handle this 'rare' problem, but, isn't certified. They appear to know what they are doing.

The fact they they are not Cummins certified has no bearing on their abilities but can certainly slow down the claims process.
