I originally had 4. 10, but just swaped out the rear dana 70 to a dana 80 with 3. 54 gears. Now I need to chenage the front end as well. What ratio is needed?? is it 3. 54 or 3. 55? Also what is reverse cut gears??

Your front will be the same as the rear. Revers cut gears are used when you flip an alxe over to raise the pinion up higher usuall in rock crawlers or extremely lifted trucks. the downside is that the revers cut gears tend to be weaker than standard cut gears.

The front would be 3:54 also. Good news is you don't need another carrier as the 4:10 share the same one the 3:54 does in a Dana 60.

Reverse cut gears are hard to explain. On our trucks, in the front, we drive on the coast side of the ring & pinion gears. Not as strong that way. Some, Fords mostly, invert the pumpkin to run the gears on the drive side.

Some aftermarket companies make what they call reverse cut gears to run on the drive side. It's not the same as an inverted pumpkin, and no strength advantage. Just run regular gears. Stick with Spicer.

It's pretty easy to find 3. 54 Dana 60 gears in OEM applications. They are all the same, and as noted above you will be running them backwards. You might be able to find new ones at 4wheelparts.com or jegs.com or summitracing.com if you can't scrounge up used ones.

Uh, wait a sec... ... if you're just installing new gears, spline count shouldn't matter (and I don't know anyway. )

I'd expect that you should be able to get a new set of gears from just about any semi-decent drivetrain shop, like Drivetrain Direct, National Drivetrain, Randy's Ring & Pinion. Reider Racing, etc. Personally, I figure the cost of new gears vs. used is minimal compared to the labor charge to set them up.

You might be farther ahead to pick up a used front D60 with 3. 54 gears from a junkyard and swap the whole assembly, rather than just gears, gears and carrier, etc.

I went the e-bay route and ended up with some real junk in used gears. I ended up buying a new set of 3. 55 at Youngs gears in Anchorage, it comes with all shims pinion seal and nut and all pinion bearings, if you install these yourself this is the only way to go. 3. 55 has a different tooth count than 3. 54 but perform the same.
