Need a little help with trans problem(gas truck)

Happy Birthday Andy

I need Texas sized help.

Was hoping someone could speculate on what the fix for this might be...

The truck is a 2001. 5 Dodge 2500 with 360 V-8. It keeps seting the code P1740 which is "rationality error has been detected in either TCC solenoid or O/D solenoid systems. " It will drop out of OD while driving sometimes and the OD off light comes on. Once the trans temp warning light even came on.

Can anyone fill me in on what this means, i. e. , is a new trans needed, is it just a solenoid gone bad, etc. ? Any info and/or speculation would be much appreciated.

BTW, the truck is not mine, but a family member's, and it is out of warranty.

Thanks,

Chris

Not the end of the world but not a cake-walk either. I pulled my hair out on one of these. The code is called "TCC O/D solenoid performance" What it monitors is RPM drop whenever the torque converter clutch is commanded in 3rd or overdrive. The code is set when the expected RPM drop is not relized. The fault is most likely a leak internally in the area of the front pump to front clutch retainer. "STAR" suggest the following parts be replaced if the cause is confirmed to be internal, torque converter, front pump, front clutch retainer, and input shaft. It would not hurt to call the customer service number in you owners manual and tell a sob story about how a friend of yours had their transmission fixed for EXACTLY the same problem.

parcher, thanks for the reply.

Here is a little more info. I was able to drive the truck today, and noticed a few things that he hadn't told me before.

1. The gear selector has become really sloppy. You can put it in D, but trans is still in N, push it between D and 2 and it will go to D, etc. I have driven this truck quite a few times before and it was never like this.

2. It will not go in to TC lock up. I am guessing this is the reason for the trans temp light that came on once before. It is probably making a lot of heat if it stays in fluid coupling all the time.

3. The shifts are really really soft, as in can't even feel it shift gears. You can see it in the tach a little bit, and can definitely hear the motor reduce RPM's, but you can not feel the shift they are so soft. Before, it shifted much better. I would say it used to feel like one of the better stock dodge trannys I have seen.

Any more help would be very much appreciated.

THanks,

Chris

IN order:

1)The detents are mechanical. If something is wrong here it either the shift linkage or the valve body. I'd have to see it to offer more.

2)TC lock up is the reason for the code. The fault is an internal trans leak and tc clutch operation is an early symptom

3) The soft shifts are the end result of the internal leak. Trans has been operated too lon on too little fluid pressure. Most likely re-build time. I would call the 800 number in your owners manual and ask for assistance, the worst they can say is no. Ask is the diesel trans gurus will do a gas transmission ( I don't see why they wouldn't ).
