Freightliner's New Truck

this is for my little yoda. . . 98 tacoma SR5 2wd 22RFE W59 5-spd manual.

over the past few months Ive noticed shifting has been getting harder and harder, I changed the fluid from the crap stuff I used(I think this is what did the transmission in) to some nice amsoil 2 months ago. . . shifting got much easier, however yesterday 1st was almost impossable as well as down shifting from 3rd to 2nd.

the clutch is practacly brand new.

I dont want to go to the toyota dealer and get fleeced for a rebuild kit and would rather find this somewhere else. . . so anyone know of some good places to get this???

I think you're gonna have a hard time finding anything for a standard anywhere other than the dealer. Do the gears grind/clash when these shifts are attempted? Could be just the pilot bearing locking up or the clutch not releasing all the way. bg

You've got my curiousity up now, I searched my "Piles of Useless Files" and came up with nothing for foreign standard trannies! Automatics but no std's. Keep us posted if you find aftermarket. Afraid it might be stealership only for you, or maybe consider a guaranteed used unit.

I remember years ago my father talked me into rebuilding a 5spd for my Datsun King Cab. It cost a bit more than a rebuild would have and made noise etc. , it had to be taken out after rebuild because of a peculiar noise, then the clutch caughed on it only to add to the sore spot. Quite the experience... If I had to do it again I would have went with rebuilt but that truck had been rode hard and put up wet, and more than once.

if it was the pilot bearing. . . which I do plan on replaceing when I pull the trans out, wouldnt reverse grind as well. . . which it doesnt.

I have been asking around and I have found a place on line that does source Toyota W transmission parts. . . however I am a bit skeptical and doubt they would last as long as the factory parts. . .

I know of a guy that probably has the part you need if not can get them. the guys name is David Almond runs a transmission shop called KDA automotive. its been a while since I talked to david but tell him "Derek Slam White" sent you.
