Need Advice about Purchasing a 95 CTD
<HR style="COLOR: #a3a4a6" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --><!-- google_ad_section_start -->A good friend of mine has a 1995 CTD 3500 2WD 5 spd Extended Cab w/179,000 miles.

He purchased it from the orignal owner 4 months ago. He has a used car lot and has really taken nice care of the truck during these 4 months. The original owner really took good care of the truck also.

Paint is excellent, hasn't been wrecked, and the only known issue is the volume control on the radio.

I want to purchase it for my son. He has a 99 Chevy Z71 regular cab and could use the extra space and also needs something that will handle my Lance slide-in and maybe my 5th Wheel RV.

Question - what should I look for as potential problems?

The rear bearings were recently replaced.

Truck looks good. Sounds good. Drives good.

I have owned a 2000, 2002 and my current 2004. There is enough difference that I most likely would not know what to look for.

Thanks for any and all responses.

BTW - I can probably pick the truck up for $7,600.

If you can get the trk for the price you said-JUMP ON IT! If the trk has been stock and not modified it should be in good shape. Things to check would be if the KDP has been tabed or taken care of. Also look at the AFC housing on the fuel pump. The upper left screw on it should be a smoth top and not a cross point or hex head bolt. If it is a bolt head or cros point screw head it has been modified with a fuel plate or original plate slid forward. If it has guages other than stock then it has likley been modified. This is not bad. Just something you need to be aware of. Research the threads on this. If the KDP has not been taken care of it is a fairly easy thing to do. There will be lots of guys on this web site who will be more than happy to give you advise with any questions you have.

Dave Gardner :)

Buddy of mine was at the feed store the other day. Guy buying feed there had a 1995 2500 4x4 auto. standard cab that was CLEAN with all maintance records. 100k and change on odometer. New tires, shocks, filters, belt. Line X spray in liner, gooesneck hitch. He just bought a new DuraMax(not very loyal) anyhow he wanted $7500 for it. My buddy jumped on it and had it two days later. Loan value was $7800. Were going to adjust valves on it next week.

go for it

Had a '95 and put over 100k on it. . no problems, was a great truck! Many a trip to west coast pulling the 5'er... good 'ole days.

That sounds very similar to my '95 dually except that mine was a 4X4. It was a great truck, I only sold it because of my knee: I needed an auto.

The headlight switch was recalled for melting, mine did. If the truck has that many miles it was probably replaced. The cruise control cable would also become frayed: my truck throttle locked nearly wide open as I was exiting the highway. There was a recall on that too and was probably replaced. Look for fraying on the CC cable.

I had the dreaded '5th gear nut failure (no, not a medical problem..... )' When I was getting the clutch re-done at about 110,000 miles I asked the shop if they should go ahead and perform the 5th gear nut fix provided by Dodge while they were in there. They talked me out of it and sure enough, about 10K later they were back in to the tune of about $600 to make that fix. The 5th gear nut will most likely fall off. The good news is that you can still drive the truck, just no 5th gear.

Good info from Dave regarding mods. There is also a fuel adjustment star on the injector pump. The nut that covers it has a painted seal to indicate tampering. You can look at that to see if an owner has been making adjustments.

The fuel return line is noted for rotting and cracking. A fuel leak high on the left side of the engine is probably that. They all do it eventually, mine did and almost stranded me. When you replace it just use some reinforced marine-grade hose and the problem is permanently solved.

If it has the LSD rear end you have to add a friction modifier or it will grind.

The lift pump is mechanical and will die some day. Mine did and was replaced by an improved MOPAR unit. If that has been done already that is a good thing.

As Dave wrote, I had the KDP staked by the dealer. That's all I can think of right now. All in all a great truck!

BTW, I have the nearly-new snow tires and wheels from my '95 in the classified. Those dually wheels are hard to find.

My previous truck was a 95 4x4 dually. Great truck. Not once in the shop. I changed oil and filter every 5,000 miles with Delo 400. Air filter and fuel filter every 10,000 miles. That truck went to Alaska and coast to coast on the lower 48. Never a problem.
