Injector question

Well, started the truck up today to run errands, idled fine, then all of the sudden, it started knocking, bucking and smoking like crazy... shut it down immediately.

I assume injectors?

If so, I might as well upgrade, any advice?

Truck has an airbox, 4" exhaust, Airdog fuel setup, and I run a Smarty.

Don't plan on upgrading the turbo... until I HAVE to ;) ...

... and I tow a heavy fifth-wheel pretty often, I travel for a living.

And, if anyone has any advice on good shops in the Dayton OH area, it would also be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Update... had it towed to a local shop, they did the test where they turned off the injectors one at a time... when they shut off #6, it idled fine.

Then they unplugged the diagnostics, and tried it again and everything was fine.

He thinks the plunger got stuck and when he turned off the injector, the pressure-release "unstuck" it.

No codes, no blow-by, no fuel in the crankcase, I'm very happy right now.

Especially since DonM is on a two to four week wait for the nozzles for the F-1's and that's the next upgrade I want, just couldn't justify it until the stock ones started acting up lol.

If it stuck once, expect it too happen again.

go get a big bottle of the power service diesel kleen and run it. also as a cummins engineer said run the **** out of it. I have knowticed that if mine is babyed to much it starts to run rough but when i run it hard and make it work its much happier.

I'm not sure how it can run fine wiht the #6 injector off.
I rented a DRB III and turned off one injector at a time just for the hell off it and with one injector not firing it idled very rough.

FYI, If you decide to do a turbo and want to save some bucks a cheap way to go is to use a 04. 5 or newer turbo. They flow a lot better than your OEM one does.

Ryan, I went to Warren County diesel, good shop?

pm if you would with any advice.

Also, I need to proofread my own posts, I didn't mean it idled "fine", it just quit belching the smoke and knocking, sorry about that.

Thanks for the heads up MMeir, I know problems usually don't just go away, so I'm prepared for it to happen again, and it's got me off my butt and researching the different injector choices, so far I think f1's are in the lead.

MA2LA, thanks for that info, I'll do that ASAP, or run a couple of canisters of SeaFoam straight into the Airdog, I think I have the SeaFoam on hand.

... and thanks for the turbo info WoodChuck, that's one I didn't know.

Definitely try this... run it hard, and loaded heavy if you can...

I have no idea. I'm just curious what people use around here.

Ryan

First time I've used them, seemed like a bunch of good guys... all gearheads, all have bombed trucks, sledpullers etc.

Main shop guy has a badass '69 Camaro dragcar that he personally built most of.

They only charged me 75 bucks for the diagnostic fee, no hourly also.
