I am going to install a temperature probe in my 46RH trans. I was thinking of getting a replacement drain plug for the stock pan with an NPT threading in it if that exists. I would do this unless there is some great benefit in upgrading the stock pan. if not, anybody know where I might find a drain plug like I just described? What did you do for your probe?

Are you running a cooler? I have one of these in the line going to the cooler. Works great for me and simple, clean installation.

Before the Accu-Temp device became available, I made a similar one out of brass. I used it several years until I finally installed a sensor in the pan while it was removed for service. IMO the line sensor was just as accurate as the in pan one and was much easier to install.

Ideal place is in the cooler output line as close to the trans as possible. Easiest way is just use the existing port and tie the OE sensor up in the harness.

Wouldn't it be better to measure the temp as it comes out of the transmission? Can you explain why it is better at the output of the cooler? Also...My 93D350 has a small stock cooler near the intercooler. Is this enough? If not, what would you recommend?

By the way, thank you all for your advice

The trans cooler output line is the front line on the trans, that is coming directly from the TC which is where 90% of heat generation in the trans occurs.

The small cooler up front is not really large enough to do much. The bulk of the cooling is done by the heat exchanger, that front cooler is just enough to take the edge off of the temp but not much more. That is why there is an option for a thermostat controlled cooler with a fan that mount sunder the bed exists. There is not much room up front for a larger cooler.

They use to make a line with a built in port. I installed one many years ago but probably not available anymore. It would put the probe exactly where Cerb said.
