I'm Back - with a new ride

New to 2012 Ram 2500 Crew Cab and New to Diesel

I've been researching for a few days on this site and others to narrow down which Dodge to purchase. For the most part this truck will be used as a daily driver as well as pull a 5th wheel RV with a weight of approx 16-17K Lbs. Travel will include east coast mountains and at least once a month 4-6 hour trips pulling this 5th wheel. I also have a 9K lbs boat I pull as well.

Just looking for a few suggestions from all of you on which year(s) truck to consider or to stay away from:

- Not doing brand new. Maybe 2005-2010.

- I assume DRW. It has to be 4x4.

- I've read a little about the reliability on the auto transmission 48RE. Some of the reads were not very good unless modifications were in place. I understand the 68RFE in the 07. 5 and up are better. Please correct me if I'am wrong here.

- I wouldn't mind doing a little modification (exhaust, air intake, chip, programmer, etc) if I needed to. Is the 5. 9 better for this?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Eddie

For daily driver the 5. 9s would be better. So 2005 to early 2007 and they will pull your trailer with a beefed up trans.

The 2007. 5s (6. 7 engines) on up are not good for grocery transportation (egr/dpf,regeneration events/cycles). ( The EPA is cracking down on companies that sell anything that deletes any emission component and the many believe that they will going after owners who delete them. But it will be probably only the 6. 7 engines owner's they go after. )

Edge was fined 500,000 bucks for selling chips that EPA(CARB) compliant. Banks is CARB compliant. Hopefully aftermarket chip and program companies will follow soon.
