I'm a second generation guy with a 16 year old son that wants to buy a first genartion truck,(yeah,I know, the kid is smarter than his old man) What should we be looking for when checking out this truck? Do the 1st gens have steering problems ,pump issues, etc. What are the common problems with the 1st gen trucks? The truck he's got his eye on is a 90, 4x4, automatic trans, about 240k on it,(est. spedo not working) Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated

thanks Doug

These old trucks, although pretty bullet proof, do have items that wear with the age. Just about anything can go bad. Worst items to date are the pump and stock transmission.

I personally think the non-overdrive trans is better than the later ones. No junk TPS to deal with and no OD unit to fail. If you want overdrive, add an aftermarket unit. The biggest problem I see with the old non-OD trucks is the axles. If you want to change gears you are limited by what will fit in the housings. I would say if the truck is good and he likes it and the price, buy it.
