I have a 2001 with 185,000 miles and have been battling a rough running and tons of white smoke on start on cold mornings problem. Late last winter I took it into a diesel shop to have the problem checked out and they changed the injectors, the next week I had a problem with the truck not starting ended up holding the throttle wide open and got it running and brought it back and they said the pump must be bad. So they installed reman pump, so this winter I had the same problem as soon as it got cold. Brought it back in and they checked injectors checked good, decided to try another pump that didn't do any good. What should I do next they seem stumped and so am I. Any help would be appreciated.

Have it checked for codes.

I point to bad pumps. Not everyone can build them right.

Fuel pressure gauge on it????

Any codes?

Fuel pressure, IAT sensor, MAP sensor, CPS, air in fuel, restricted filter... lots of things can cause your symptoms. I loathe throwing parts at things until it goes away.

Truck still did same thing after picking it up from the diesel shop on Friday. I took the IAT sensor out and it looked clean and I had a ohm reading of around 24k on my work bench according to the chart I found that should be about right. It had no codes. Do you guys think this could be a bad connection on a harness or battery or something like that? I think thats where I will start tonight. The worst thing is that it is starting to warm up after this week and the problem gets less noticeable with warmer outside air temps.

I don't know about fuel heater but the headlights will dim when the grid heaters cycle, so I'm fairly sure their working.
