After putting a lot of mileage on our Winnebago View the last bunch of years Momma has won out and we are trading the park it anywhere, 17 mpg, not so comfortable spacewise motorhome for a gasp.... fifth wheel. Not a super big one but it'll be weighing maybe 13K if we ever get the genny for it. So we are using her '05 quad cab auto 4x4 longbed for the designated tow vehicle. Everything bone stock. I'm thinking it needs an exhaust brake. After all the hub bub about when a break would work right in that vintage 48RE, has it been resolved? Can I get by with buying a brake and a controller and not have to give the transmission the full Goerend treatment now?
Thanks

I had a Jake Ex. Brake installed by the dealer when I bought my '06 new. At about 65K miles, I changed to a Pac Brake when the vacuum pump failed. I installed it myself and except for having to replace a solenoid that came loose and was damaged by the fan, I've had no issues with it. I leave it on all the time, towing or not, and love it. The '06 PCM controls the brake beautifully and I've had no issues with the 48RE. I don't know if the '05 PCM is designed to control the brake but I'm sure many have had a Pac installed. My truck now has 162K miles, virtually all using the exhaust brake.

The 05 ECM is capable of running the exhaust brake, but the trans programming wasn't setup for an auto with an exhaust brake until 2006. You may need some sort of trans controller.

I would give the guys at Pac Brake a call and see what kit they recommend. You will need a build date for your eninge before you call.

I ran the Jacobs Brake and the PXRB on my 05, the PXRB was a stronger brake at lower rpms and I would go that route, plus I'm not sure you can still even get the Jacobs brake... thou the Banks is very similar.

Pac Brake PRXB here. Over 100,000 miles on it with zero problems with the brake itself. The compressors and check valves are the weak point, in MY opinion, but still NOT a "don't buy because". I have a much larger air system on my truck and all works well.

ALso put over 100k on a pac brake PRXB... never ever did brake pads!!!... I had a VIAIR OBA system and air bags so never had the issues with the small ping tank and compressor Pac Supplies, but Id by that and only that again in a heartbeat.

195k on a Pac Brake. Replaced Front Brake pads at 156K. Did have to replace the actuator once, but that was before I had the lube for it. Replacement actuator has been on for about 120K with no problems.

I have an 04’ with a 235 motor linked to a 48re with 10.75 rear you think I can put the pac brake in? I had pac brake in my 97’ with nv4500 did brakes once in 19yrs lol

10.5”? I thought those were gone by mid 2003?

But yes, you can add a brake with a trans controller.

If you buy the right kit from PacBrake for your truck it comes with all the needed electronics for your MY.
No add-ons needed then. That's why they have a dozen of different kits just for the 3rd Gens.

Install it and enjoy. Best update ever.
