Hey guys, I need an Oilite pilot bearing/bushing, but I'd like to get one that's . 75" x 1. 0" x 1. 125" long, like that mentioned here by Joe Donnelly.



I want this long bearing in order to have the most possible contact surface area between the bearing and the input shaft journal.



I don't have a bearing house nearby so I'd like an online seller recommendation.
 
Granger has these and I also found them at my local ACE/ true Value hardwhere... . They were in those odd parts plastic binns If you still can't find one eMail me with your adress and I'll send you some
 
That was a long time ago. Is he still recommending an oilite bushing? I wouldn't. I tried one and it didn't last very long, fortunately (?) fifth gear fell off so I had the trans out to see the pilot inner diameter had grown considerably.

Pull the flywheel and have it machined to accept a larger sealed ball bearing.
 
If the bellhousing is properly aligned, and the transmission input “nose” is smooth and unworn, the stock needle bearing lasts very well. Just don't try to get much over 100,000 miles on it to be safe. The bronze bushing is safer for the transmission input in the event of misalignment, transmission bearing wear (causing the shaft to wobble), or damage (scoring) of the input "nose". As a rule of thumb, I'd put the safe life of the bushing at 50,000 miles although I know they often lasted a lot longer than that in First Generation Turbo Diesels, as well as in Chevy and Mopar passenger cars.

I ordered the SAE 841 (aka Oilite) bushing from Standard Transmission (these folks are very helpful), item # BU202 (Mopar # 05083021AA). However, this bushing is only 5/8" long, so I ordered a 1" long bushing (Item # 6391K265) and a 1. 25" long bushing (item # 6391K267) from McMaster-Carr, all SAE 841.

It looks like the 1" long bushing will do the job; completely utilizing the entire area of the pilot journal. Here's the tricky part... I need to know how far to press the 1" bushing into the flywheel in order to center the bushing longitudinally with the input shaft journal. Can anyone help me with that?
 
I know this is an old thread but I am curious if a slightly damaged input shaft could be used with the new SBC roller pilot setup. If the bearing has an inner race does it really matter if the shaft is a little scored up from a failed needle bearing. I don't recall this being discussed anywhere.

Good question. Assuming the outer race is pressed into the flywheel, how does one *press* the inner race onto the input shaft before installing the transmission? Or does this setup require machining the input shaft journal?
 
A little scored up wouldn't be a problem with the SBC pilot bearing. The SBC bearing is pressed into the flywheel but is sized for a slip fit onto the input shaft
