Ron,

I have the mag at home, but I won't be there until Friday. That article was probably about problems with the TPS (Trottle Position Sensor). There was quite a bit of discussion about that in several issues beginning with #11. If the TPS is not the problem, I will scan the article and send it to you when I get home. I had that problem with mine at that time. What is probably happening is that the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) is locking and unlocking because of a bad signal from the TPS. The transmission is a three speed with OD being the 4th gear so it's NOT shifting from 4th to OD. If the locking and unlocking of the TCC is quick enuff you can experience a very violent jerking or banging when it happens. With mine it had to be when I was pulling my trailer using the cruise control up a grade just steep enuff so that the TCC would lock. This cause the RPM to drop a little and with the TPS sending a bad signal the CPM decided to unlock the TCC. This caused the conditions to return to the situation that resulted in a lockup. It would do that so rapidly that it would almost jar my fillings loose. My problem was very hard to reproduce so I dragged my travel trailer all over Humboldt Co. until I found a grade that was just right to cause it every time.

I see it now Joe. Its at the top of page 22 under "HP UPRATE"

It decribes Bad andys` problem. Then it says to reference issue 10 Technical Topics for the fix.

Lemme dig up issue 10

I will post the important parts of :

"1994-1995 Automatic Overdrive Ghost"

This applies to post 94 trucks with auto transmission. You`re driving down the road about 60 mph, light load, in overdrive, torque converter locked, cruise control set. All of a sudden your engine revs and you wonder whats going on. Your O. D switch lights, your transmission shifts to third, your torque converter unlocks, and your cruise contol shuts itself off.

We discussed the overdrive ghost and a surging when the transmission shifts to overdrive and lockup under light load. Another symptom is a vibration or percieved engine miss at approximately 1100 rpm, as the torque converter lock-up would engauge. The condition occurs in 4th gear at speeds between 42 & 48 MPH. TSB 21-04-95 covers the problem. See the full TSB here: http://www.ecpe. vt. edu/~dfritz/technical/tsb95/21_04_95. HTM

Bob Patton answers:

We had problems with an "overdrive ghost" on a truck where I work. We had the same symptoms as you did with your truck. Finally, with the DRB 3 (scan tool) hooked up , the ghost appeared. On our truck, the problem was traced to a faulty transmission temperature sensor CONNECTOR. We had already replaced the transmission temperature sensor. The female connector was faulty, giving the DRB 3 false temperature readings and causing erratic shifting out of overdrive.

Hope this helps #ad
