Exhaust Brakes

Hey, All:

I'm seriously considering buying a used backhoe. I just looked at a nice clean one in Maryland, about 125 miles from my home in southern NJ. Any ideas how to get it here?

I think it's too large for my truck to (safely) tow, and I have no trailer for it anyway. I guess-timate it to weigh around 15k.

Anyone nearby with a constuction trailer and want to make a few dollars?

You could probably rent a trailer for a day and get it yourself. I rented a 16' 12k flatbed tag for a load of walnut trunks for $75/day.

Another option might be to ask an excavation contractor to go look at it with you and haul it back fofr you.

I haul my hoe at 19k all the time, not bad at all, go rent a tandem duelly 20k trailer with beavertail, 90 bucks a day here.

Cheers, Kevin

I have a 2500. Unfortunately, I never put a brake controller on it (and won't now as a new one is on order), so I'll need a trailer with surge brakes.

Where can I rent one of these?

I'll bet you won't find one with surge brakes. That heavy it will have a pintle hook and electric (or air) brakes.

I'd go with what bighammer suggested and ask a contactor/excavator to move it for you. Most guys would be glad to make a little extra cash and if they're anything like us, they love to haul stuff!

What kind of hoe is it? What about the guy you're buying it from? He has no ideas as to how to move it?

Hmm, that might be a little far for them. I will check though. How much would you offer for them to haul it? If you want you can shoot me a PM.

hauling

:) I had a local hauling company move my case 580b extendahoe 100 miles for me and the charge was 250. 00. I was happy to pay that, as the tractor is real heavy. Tim

The Pipe, I had to reply as you are the first south Jersey person I have seen on here. I live near Medford, but my parents live in Mays Landing. Good to see another one on here.

If you need, my '02 2500 has an electric brake controller, but only a bumper-pull type hitch. If that helps you are welcome to it. Or... if you want to spring for the gooseneck hitch we could find a trailer and go down there.

E-mail me if I can help in any way.

Mr. Whitmore when you come down to Texas bring that hoe with you and you can drop it off at my place and I will put it to work. You can pick it up on your way back. But it better be in good working condition cause I don't want to have to be working on it. :D

not to be harsh on anyone but... . how does a guy buy a backhoe and not have a trailer to haul it?? also... . put the damn brake controller in the truck haul some I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER!! :) ... . just a thought

A brake controller is pretty cheap (like $50) and trailer rental about $75. Maybe wiring and socket another $25?

I still vote for the DIY solution. Then your truck is set up for the next time you need something moved. (and bring your camera for the Kodak moments)

backhoe

:) A answer to the question of how a person can have a hoe and no way to move it, enough use to justify on your own property. It's amazing how many friends you get when you get a hoe, but who are unwilling to pay the transport costs to use it. Maybe its just me, but I think this is too much load to safely move with a pickup. I'll probably get it now, oh well! Tim

Weight

There is no doubt in my mind that my truck can move this backhoe. There is also no doubt that if something happens during the trip home, I will be caught out there. My receiver has a weight limit of 10k when using a weight distributing hitch, and 5k without. How can I explain moving a backhoe (15k) plus trailer (2. 5k) if I wreck?

Plus, as Tim said, "It's amazing how many friends you get when you get a hoe... "
