I have a "Big Stick" Camshaft, HD Push Rods, and 110# Valve Springs on order from Hamilton Cams:cool:. The parts are supposed to be here by the end of June. I NEED to find/buy all the tools before the last week of June.

Can anyone rent/loan me the tools required?

I am located in Indianapolis, IN. I will pay shipping or come pick them up if someone can help me out.

Here are the tools I need:

1) Valve Spring Compressor - 8319A

2) Crank Barring tool - 7471-B

3) Tappet Install Tool - 8502 (my truck has 60K mi on it, Hamilton says no NEW tappets needed?? hmm. . opinions?)

4) Fuel Injector Remover (rather not use screwdriver)

Can anyone think of other specialty Items I will need? Or helpful hints on the install?

Any help would be great! Free labor is also accepted!

Thanks,

Jared (pretty excited)

Jared,

Prolly wouldn't be a bad idea to get a crank barring tool through Geno's, reasonable price and comes in handy when you adjust your valves.

I have a SPG COMP tool on it's way and I will get the engine barring tool from Geno's. Any ideas on the injector remover? Hear most people use a small "pry bar. "

Mine came out relatively easily by hand. If you pry a little, just use common sense and pry at the base where the hold down is.

Go to home depot, etc and get 1/2" dowel rod to hold the tappets.

I have the Miller injector tool if you really want it, but I wouldn't even waste the money shipping it to you. I originally bought it to do my injectors, but Miller screwed up the shipping so I used a screw driver. Email me if you really want to borrow it. -- email address removed --

It's not necessary to buy the expensive Miller kit for the dowels. Just use 1/2" dowel rod, cut to about 16" in length. For cylinders 5 and 6, cut to around 13" or so for clearance. -ENafziger

OK easy enough ... so I need 8 dowels - 16" and 4 dowels - 13" in length. Need a bag-o-rubber bands as well.

Someone mentioned "fitting" each dowel to a tappet (buy one as a guide)? Think there is need to do so or just smooth the cut ends and go with it?

I was also instructed that I do not need to change tappets unless my factory cam (62K mi) shows wear on the lobe nose or edges... So how to make the tappet install tool (string with "insert" for tappet) in the event I NEED to replace tappets? What to use to hold tappet to string?

Tip: "PDR guy" said to make tappet install easier: put level on top of engine and raise rear axle until engine is level. This way string will "fall" down push rod bores easier.

Thanks AGAIN

dont forget the dowels and PVC "tray"

I am assuming you are talkin PVC pipe for the "tray". What size 1" 1/2"? Schedule 40? Yeah I know it's not rocket science... just trying to be prepared BEFORE starting the "fun. "

After cutting in half to make into a tray... does PVC flex too much to hold tappets for cyl 5 and 6 up for dowel insertion?

No, it's really not that big of deal if you're handy with wrenches.

Take a hacksaw and cut about an inch or little more slit down the center, and slighty round the end of the dowel on a grinder/sander/etc. Then take it and try it. Pull the pushrod out and stick the down down. Push hard or tap gently with a deadblow. Pull up on the dowel and you'll be able to feel if you have the tappet. Just don't pull the dowel out and keep trying it a bunch because each successive time makes it fit a little looser.

I used zip ties instead of rubber bands, but either would probably work.
