A friend of mine is looking for a class-C (wants the overhead bed for kids). His 2 biggest criteria: Needs to be able to pull a 5K trailer behind (horses), and wants a slide-out in the living area. Doesn't want a truck camper (wants more room). Accepts that it may not be a diesel - probably a gas, big-block (doesn't mind the fuel mileage). Will go new, or slightly-used.

What is a good brand/manufacturer to look at? Are there any chassy/motors to stay away from? Where can you find tow-ratings (most brochures are very sketchy about this)?

I'll take a stab at this. My grandparents by marriage have a 2002 or 2003 (not sure) Winnebago class C motorhome. Van front, Chevrolet HD chassis. Real nice rig. They have the 8. 1 liter gas behemoth. Man can that thing pull hard. Its the only RV that I've seen smoke duallys (albeit one side). If I were looking for a class C RV that burned gasoline and could pull hard, I'd look no further. My personal opinion is that for big block gasoline engines, GM has the market nailed. They have the Allison transmission behind that 8. 1. Yeah, they get about 8mpg, but a diesel for them would not be worth the hassle. Also, the 2004 GMC anc Chevy van chassis are available with all wheel drive. Now you can have a class C RV that can actually manage on snowy and icy roads!

Hope that helps.

I've looked at a few of the Class C's. Many are on a 3500 frame. For towing, go with a 4500 frame. The 3500 frame is only adequate for the vehicle chassis only. The 4500 adds the extra GVW for towing. It varies by model and manufacture if the frame actually extends all the way to end of the chassis. Many of the Class C's require extensive modifications to extend the frame to safely tow off the back. This is where Class A's built on a 2. 5ton frame become superior.
