Hello im located in southern VT with not alot of parts available quickly so looking for advice before changing my crank seal. its been leaking for over a month now so im trying to set aside a couple off hours to fix it so im wondering if i need any special tools and if i should just buy a crank seal from the dealer or is carquest okay?

thanks brad greene

Front or rear seal? When you say "a couple hours" I assume you mean the front one. I don't know what comes in the Carquest kit. I know in the Cummins kit you get the seal, installer tool, (for setting the depth), and a plastic sleeve to start the seal over the crank. I wouldn't get it from the dodge dealer. Do you have a cummins dealer nearby? If not, a Case or Case/IH dealer will have the seal kit. I work for a Case dealer, and our kit comes with those 3 parts. If you have the cummins part #, just change the 1st digit, "3" to a "J", that's the Case number.

No special tools needed. I'd pull the front cover off, easiest way to do it.

Hope this helps.

I did mine while doing the KDP tab.

It wasnt too bad, just a little tricky getting it started straight.

I put the seal in the freezer for a day or two. I dont know if it helped.

Way easier with the front cover off. I bashed up the first seal i bought trying to get it installed with the cover on the engine. One side is pretty well supported by the gear case and the other side bounces with the flexy cover. It was a PITA getting it in straight and on the last whack, my driver slipped to the side and I mashed the front of the seal. I took the front cover off and supported the cover evenly around the seal area and it went together nicely with no problems. (other than having to buy that second seal. shipped in UPS)

I would take off the cover, check KDP and gear case to block bolts.

All this assumes that you are talking about the front seal of course. The rear was easy to install after I pulled the engine. ;)

x2 minus the freezer part. Sounds like it might help though, i'll have to give that a try next time.
