What do I need to know in order to go to dyno Dodge Cummins trucks??

Where I am going with this is what type of dyno do our trucks need to go on?? Is there a specific brand or style we need due to the high power levels?

Is there anything that needs to happen to the trucks before they go?? I gathered something about a tach wire???

Anything elde I need to know??

Thanks!

Robert

Robert, I'll be more than happy to supply you from my vast knowledge acquired on 2 trips to the dyno. ;) :-laf

You don't need a specific type of dyno for your truck. The operator will usually run the truck. If you do, he will tell you what to do.

Some dynos you just spin a drum, others need to have info input, rear gear ratio, tire size, etc. On this type he has to set the load, most newer trucks do ok with 25%, mine choked right out. 10% was not enough.

The tach wire, usually they put on an optical pickup for RPM, and a piece of reflective tape on the balancer or someplace. This is for torque.

Pretty straight forward, stomp on the skinny pedal!

If you have other questions, I'll try to answer them for ya.

Thnaks for the reply!!

So, am I gethering correct that thyey do NOT need a tach wire to connect?? A flashy sticker will do??

Also, when you say 25% load, what is that reffering to??

Also, anything special on dynoing a newer Ram?? Like a 6. 7 for example??

Thanks!

Robert

Yup, no wire. They'll put a piece of tape on, and run a wire with a sensor on it from their machine to the truck near the balancer.

Some dynos, like Dunbars, have a 6000 lb drum you have to spin. That's the load. The computer figures it all out, hp, torque, etc. On the one I was on, which I can't remember the name of, you have a smaller drum, that drag is applied to electrically, and that's how it's loaded, thus the % of load. You can set how hard it is to turn. I don't think he had it loaded enough for my truck, because I had 366 hp, and I did a bunch of mods, and only came up to 388 hp. And the truck pulls waaayyy harder than it did before. In the spring, I'm going back and dyno again, and play with the load settings. No rush without 12 people waiting to hit the rollers. Oo.

Newer truck should be the same deal.

Good luck on the rollers, let us know how you do! ;)

I dynoed my truck back to back at the schied diesel show one year on a Mustang dyno, and before that run on a "dynamic", I think it's called. I don't remember what the other style is called. I do know the number's were way different between the two. I think the mustang is more accurate though! I may be wrong. The first run gave me 366hp and 966tq! The mustang was 425hp and 856tq! Quite a difference! Good luck!

The one I ran on is a Superflow SF-840.

Beach, those numbers are way different! I think I'd try a 3rd dyno for an average. ;)
