Greetings,

I am a new member - just joined. This looks like a fantastic site. I just purchased a 92 w250 club cab LE with 132000 on it. The trans was quiet when I bought it but now 2400 miles later it is starting to whine. I am going to sink the money into a complete trans/T-case/clutch overhaul. Need any help you can give on what to look for, what to modify, what brand parts to buy etc. I want to give the Getrag one more chance. Note: I don't tow heavy - a 7500 pound travel trailer is the most I pull.

Thanks for a great site,

Brennan R. Cook

Brennen, make sure you have 5W30 motor oil in it. This transmission has failed because of lack of lubrication and improper lube-gear oil, ATF, although Dusthomps, had good luck with ATF. The lack of lube is cured by overfilling by one quart. Fill is 3. 5qts, I overfilled to 5 qts. This is done by filling the extra 1qt thru the top bolt in PTO cover, or as some have done by taking the shifter out and filling thru it. Most have run as I am MObil one synthetic 5w30. There is plenty of research info in 1st gen archives on getrag transmission. You said you were goin to have 20K wrapped up in this truck, well if your pocket is deep, you be better off upgrading to the NV4500HD 5sp trans new and installed at Quad4x4 i believe for around $4k, I may be off there, less if u want to install it yourself. Good luck. Bill

Be careful with synthetics

Remember, synthetic oil will turn a small leak into a big one; a big leak becomes a seive. If you have ANY leaks at all, go with a blend or straight 5w30. I have used 5w50 or 15w50 in my Getrags. THe last one got reuglar dino oil because of a rear output shaft leak, but I still overfilled it by removing the shift tower. The design of the thing only allows it to splash lube the upper shaft in 5th gear if you fill to the fill hole.

OTOH, a little noise form the Getrag is nothing to worry about. Havent had one that didnt whine just a little at highway speeds. Common cure is muffler removal or turning up the radio:D

Thanks for help.

OK I hope I am doing this correctly and this shows up where it is supposed to. Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions. I have decided to have Inland truck parts completely rebuild the Getrag, the 205, replace the clutch with a South Bend and generally look over the entire geartrain. The throwout bearing was sqealing even with the pedal out anyway. Most of the info I have used to make my decisions have been based upon what I have read here at TDR. This is much better than trial and error which has been my approach to modifications in the past.

Thanks again,

Expect more questions

I agree with Daniel, a little noise from the Getrag is probably common. I have about 2500 miles on my fresh rebuild and it has a slight whine in 3rd. Other than that the rest is quiet and tight. Oh, you'll come to know me as the oddball of the bunch. I'm currently running 10w-30 synthetic, previously ATF as Bill mentioned... . I'll probably never fit in with the group. #ad
