Archived trouble shooting before pulling motor

96 12valve 5spd 215, 70K, PDR370's, 100plate, 3000GSK, Timed at 16. 5.



Lost a lot of its power today and gained a shakey idle. Used to peg a 1600* now wont get over 1200* or slip the stock clutch when it ued to at will. Thought the governor arm may be going under the plate so removed the plate with no change. Exhaust is no longer dark black but more greyish and smells as he described like burnt toast. Says he tried to run it out on the way home and thought he heard a loud pop out of the exhaust. Says the exhaust sounds a bit more ragged than before. Also says the engine is noisier than before with maybe more of a clicking/tapping noise comming from the IP.



Any ideas on what could cause this? Timing was set last wednesday of last week, could it have slipped? Maybe a bad load of fuel? Maybe a dead lift pump?
 
Could be the lift pump failing. When mine was on it's way out I noticed that my temps dropped and even my water temp was lower.
 
overflow valve changed lately? mine made a helluva difference. .



lift pump is definetly possible, yet tougher to change...

I would check the fuel pressure to be certian it is getting the "blood" that it needs.



If taking the plate out didn't change anything I would suggest the AFC arm is not moving out of the way but with a poor idle and louder engine "clatter" I would think there is an underlying problem.



I'm guessing it's starving for fuel.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. He's changing the fuel filter today and checking the overflow valve. If that dont work I'm probably gonna take my fuel pressure gauge over tomorrow and see where thats at.

He changed the fuel filter, added stanadyne, put in a new overflow valve, cleaned the strainer and it seemed to be ok for most of today but now its back. Hardly any smoke low EGT's and power. Any ideas? I'm goin over tomorrow to check fuel pressure.
