Hi, I rebuilt my sons 48re in his 06 2500 this weekend. We bought a overhaul kit with red alto's and koleen steels, Kevlar 2nd gear band and stock reverse band. new single disk billet converter I Installed a Transgo shift kit and Sonnax Billet servo kit. This overhaul kit came with the extra clutches and steels for the direct drum and the OD unit for the extra apply surfaces. Ive rebuilt several 727 torqueflights for my race cars back in the day and the 48re is very similar almost identical so I know a little about them.
My ? is...

I can take it out of OD by pressing the OD switch on the gear selector and start off from a dead stop and 1st , 2nd, 3rd shifts good, 1st to 2nd ,very firm. 2nd to third has just a little overlap, but its not bad. Once i'm in 3rd I can let off throttle pressure just a little and press the OD switch and it goes into 4th fine, Nice and firm and then I can feel converter lock up, really nice and firm ... If I leave the OD switch alone and let it shift all by itself ,it flares up going from 3rd to 4th... Why does it shift ok if I manually work the OD switch on the gear selector and slips,or flares if I let it shift all by itself...
This is just normal throttle pressure ,nothing extreme, just normal driving...

I'm not sure but I'm thinking this might be my issue... The first set of clutches that I installed in the OD unit, the kit had more steels and clutches and a new bottom plate. I had to take out the wavey retainer to get the clearance where it had some play in the clutches , not to much. I think around .080 between the top steel and the retainer ring on top...Chime in if you think you see something wrong please. The only thing I did not check was the measurement from the shim and roller bearing on theOD Piston to the OD clutch... I didn't change any hard parts ,so I figured it would be the same. Before I go pulling off the OD unit , I was hoping for some expert Transsmission guy's advice on what they think... Ive tried another fourm looking for answers ,so some of you may have seen this ? on other sites... Thanks for any advice in advance !!!!!!

With pressed OD Button your Converter goes Lockup in 3rd. Then depress OD you get a Shift to OD under Lockup, that feels firm.
You can also have Lockup in 2nd Gear with Shiftlever on Second. Then Shift to D with OD out and it shifts locked to 3rd Gear.
That all happens especially under low to medium load.

ok guys I found the problem. I had the double sprag in the OD unit in backwards. Flipped it around and it works like it's supposed to. my fault. just glad I could take the OD unit off without having to pull the transmission. Larry over at Transgo suggested to me to look at the sprag. He's was such a big help. call those guys if you need some advice. they know there stuff,at least Larry does.
