flushed my coolant sytem tonight, went to change the thermostat, and the one they gave me looks nothing like what I took out of mine, which is still the factory original. I bought it from a local diesel shop which looks like they apparently bought it from the local dodge dealer cause its in a cummins box with a mopar sticker on it. My old one has a big spring on the bottom side of it that goes in the head, the new one has a huge, thick o-ring or rubber band around the body of it that goes in the head. I don't know if this is just a newer style or if he gave me one for a 12v. Problem is, I'm doing this at work, and I can't leave the truck sit over night. the part # on the mopar label is 05015708AC. I'd just put the old one back in, but the rubber seal in the center of it is cracked up pretty bad. thanks

UGH!!!!!I just went through the same thing over the last month! I had been running with a popped head gasket and no thermostat for almost a year and then when I finally got around to ringing my head last month I went and bought the same exact thermostat from the dealer as you describe. All was good for the first few miles then one day I was driving to a friends and I noticed my temp guage at 220 so at his house I open the hood and the upper hose is cool to the touch... hmmm. . so I took the t-stat out and cut the guts out. Truck wouldnt get very warm after that and in fact never came off the lowest reading. So I replaced the t-stat again with the same new type and wham its running good again. Well I drove it a few more weeks and all of a sudden I have coolant running out of my head gasket again WITH rings and studs!!!!! So I pull my head off to find a blown out gasket and guess what... that T-stat was the cause of my failure because it wont open up. I went and talked to my dealer parts man who is a good friend and he said he has heard about this problem alot lately in the dealer network. He seems to think that the t-stat is the problem and is gonna try to help get me compensated for my time and costs on my problem. Until then Im running the factory original t-stat, which hasnt been a problem now in 1500 miles or so with a new head gasket. I hope you have better luck than I did!

PS. this was all on my 2000 24 valve

I had several other professionals look at the T-stat also that I removed and they are all familiar with the Cummins and most of them believe it is a t-stat for a 12 valve in the wrong package.

Well, I've got it in, and all is well so far. I just found it odd that it would have that huge rubber "band" around the body of it if theres nothing in the head for it to seal against. Not to mention how different it is from the factory original.
