Went to inquire about getting the high idle feature activated on my 06 (auto) today. Everyone at the dealership gave me the "duhhh... . never heard of that". They tryed and failed to look it up. What do I need to tell these knuckheads to get this enabled? :(

Goodbye!! :-laf :-laf

Seriously, if they don't know go find a dealer that does. Letting some yokel that doesn't even know what is available mess around with my truck is just plain scary. :(

I don't know where you live. I live in Alaska. I have an 06 3500 and the high idle automatically comes on about 32* F or colder. When I fire off the truck when it is less than 32* the high idle comes on after the fuel heater quits cycling.

I'm referring to the high idle that is turned on and controlled with the cruise controls. Just wondering where I can tell the dealer to look up the activation procedure.

Don''t let them tell you they have to flash the computer to get it to work... It's just a simple "enable" that the technician can do with the diagnostic tool... takes about a minute to do, and that includes driving it into the service bay.

Took me about six months before I was able to get past three different service managers at two different stealers & ask the *******'s diesel tech directly if he knew how to do it. "Sure, no problem", he said.

Pitiful that the stealers don't know squat about their own product...

Thanks, I'll try again. Everyone at the dealer was real nice and they tried to figure it out. They weren't giving me the run around, they're just clueless. Sad really.

When I asked my dealer to do this I got the same duhhh from the service writer. It wasn't until the diesel mech came along did he know anything about it. The mech called it a "program extension". Said it would take an hour, but in reallity, it took about 10 minutes. I never did see a DC number for the feature. Maybe they need to contact a DC rep. It is scary if they don't know about stuff.

You can show the dealer the owners manual, it talks about enabling this feature. Hopefully they won't try to charge you for this, have heard of some dealers doing this. Good luck!

Like me, my dealer got me for $85 to turn on the driving lights and the high idle.

Its bad when the sales people tell you not to go to their dealership to get your vehicle worked on.

Tin Man,

Obvisously I did not read my user manual close enough. What is the benefit to be able to manually control the high idle?

I think the reason the factory put it there is for PTO use and to aid in warm up. I have a PS Diesel HIgh Idler on my '01 and use it all the time. One of my main uses in for running the A/C in the summer when we stop with the dogs in the truck. I don't like to let my truck sit there burn $3. 00 fuel while I'm in a restraunt, but you have to take care of the pups. Also use it to run the On-Board Air compressor if I'm using air tools. I have also used the idler in my 01 for a low speed constant throttle cruise control for some unusual situations. Works great. Put it in 4 low and throttle it up and you have a street legal tractor. Obviouly, I won't be able to do that on the '06. It's just a handy little feature to have.

You can also idle it up higher than the auto feature which sits at about 1000-1100. With the cruise buttons you can go from 1000-1500. Running it just a little higher than the auto feature warms it up that much faster. With the jake brake I can set it at 1200 and turn the brake on. It warms up nicely in that mode.
