I had the right rear tire on my truck blow out today. I mean BLOW OUT. Side wall is completely gone. So now I need new tires, since they were worn pretty well anyway. They were BFG A/T's. Which were decent on the highway but pretty much sucked in the mud and the trails. So I'm looking at MT/R's and Bridgestone dueler Revo's. I'm leaning toward the MT/R's because my friend has them on his jeep and they kick butt off road. I don't have any experince with the Revo's.

I need a tire that I can abuse on a trail, and still get decent mileage from. I also need one that I can tow a heavy gooseneck trailer with. I don't care about wet traction, or snow, since I don't see much rain, and snow is what tire chains are for. So let me know what you think.

I just put Michelin XPS Tractions on (lots of posts on TDR on these); they are awesome. Aggressive tread with good ride, awesome longevity. Kinda pricey, but thats OK for a 60,000 + mile tire. Just my . 02

I wore out a set of 31x10. 50 MT/Rs on my modified Jeep Cherokee, and it's now got a set of 33x12. 50s on it. Great tires on dry surfaces, strong sidewalls, and (siped) they do well in the wet and in snow. Mud? Not so good there, the tread tends to load up and they don't clean out well. BFG M/Ts will do better in the mud, but they'll be louder on the street.

As far as load, just look for a load range E tire. My CTD has a set of Michelin LTX M/S stock size tires, but it's a pavement only truck, it'll be a tow rig for my Heep. About the only off pavement it'll see is a two track.

Toyo

Toyo M/T! These tires come E-Rated and have excellent traction. They are quiet onthe street, even quieter then the wifes snow tires on her little car  . Sam

If you're looking for a tough tire with highway life go with a Toyo M-55 or Michelin XPS traction. Two of the best tires on the market.

I've had really good luck with Big O tires. Funny name, good product, great warranty. I have the A/T's on mine, but they have some aggressive treads too. I think Cooper makes them, but can't remember for sure. If they blow, get road cuts, or whatever, they are replaced FREE up to tread life limit. They now have 60,000 mile guaranty too. I've got 3 or 4 new tires, no questions asked. It's a beautiful thing!

I'm Going with Super Swamper Truxus Mt's they are 10 ply, agressive tread, the 285's i think are rated to 3800-4000lbs a piece. :D

Well I went to America's tire/Discount tire for those of you who know who they are. I wanted the MT/R's in 315/75/16. He didn't have any and only found 4 at their stores across the country. So he called his goodyear distributor and he said the military bought a lot of this size and there was a nation wide back order, and that goodyear has slowed/ stopped alot of it's production. Said he thinks they're getting ready to move over sea's. I don't know if this is true, but bottom line was I wasn't getting the MT/R's. So I looked around at some mags and saw the toyo open country M/T's were similar, so I asked about those. Didn't have them, called toyo's customer service number, they're on nation wide back order too! CRAP! All this took 45 min at the tire store. He did find a set of MT/R's at the end, they were over 300 bucks per tire! I came home, did some research and decided on the 305/70/16 nitto terra grappler. They're load range E, have a decent tread( I don't go in mud, so what's the point of an M/T?) and were priced right for me. So far I have 30 miles on them, I know not much, but at 55psi they ride better than my old BFG AT's at 35 psi, and at 55 psi. They look good, hopefully they'll take a beating on the Sierra Neveda trails. If not, I got the free replacement warranty ;) .

I just bought some tires and am completely satisfied. I gave up some fuel mileage but like the tire more. Anyway all four mounted and balanced were $630. 00. They are Durango with an a/t tread. Best part is, They are 305/70/R16. the equivalent of 33's. and the fit right on the stock rim. My local is Western NC. Smooth, quiet, ride no problem under weight so far. fuel went from 18-21mpg highway to 17-19. Town went from 15-16mpg to 13-14 mpg.

actually your fuel milage probably didn;t change you have to account for the oversized tires messing with your speedo and milage. you went from what a 265 to a 305, your speedo will be off about 15% or about 5mph at 60. this also effects miles traveled. . you went farther than it says you did :-laf

I went through the same process trying to find an E rated tire. I ended up with the Nitto Terra Grapplers as well. I've got about 10k miles on them so far and they hardly look worn at all. I run about 40 psi. Softens up the ride a little and they are still firm and handle great.

here's a handy tool for calculating the speedometer difference. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

How are the toyo mt55's? . . i see those have nice side walls and heavy load rating look decent for a tire. . my dad heard the toyos have soft thread and don't last long and one have and info on them?. . or price on them?... ha its going on a 2002 quad cab 4x4 auto. . it has 410s now we want to put 285s on it and hopefully swap out the 410s to 355s. . what do you think the mileage will be then?

thanks

Deo

If you want a 285, go with the M-55

If you want stock size, go with XPS traction.

If you want 315s, go with Toyo M/Ts.

295s, go with Toyo A/T or Nitto Grappler (very similar tires).

I've been running Michelins on mine the last two sets. Had the LTX A/S first time and this time got the LTX A/T. The A/T is a little more agressive than the A/S but they seem to real good under all conditions.

Had them in the snow earlier this year and they held real nice while I was in 4wd going about 35-40mph. Been in some mud and they weren't too bad. No issues in the rain or dry.

I got 63k miles out of the A/S and would have gotten more but my alignment is off so the edges started going.

These are probably not a tire someone would want for extreme duty use but for general towing and everyday they aren't too bad.

Those Super Swampers sure look cool and do real good in the mud but they may wear fast on the road.

ok, if I want the Toyo m55. . anybody have a link to the cheapest places to get them and a price?. . my dad heard the toyos didn't last long. . I think he heard about the open county at or mt' s. . not the M-55. . I read the M-55 last a long time. . any input ?

thanks

Deo

After three failures(probably due to "D" rating) including a near catastrophic blowout on the freeway with Bridgestone A/T's, I can't emphasize enough the need to go with an "E" rated tire. I'm currently running 285-75-16 BFG KO's due to the three ply sidewalls but still don't feel safe. Also these tires ride rough and are fairly noisy. I'd go with the Toyo M-55's next time as I hear they balance well. My BFG's have taken anywhere from 2 oz. to 9 oz. per tire to balance even with road force balancing from Discount. They said all BFG's balance the same haphazard way due to a two piece construction. The two halves are joined together in the final process. Toyo's. Michelins, Bridgestones etc. are molded in one piece. Be safe!

I've got 35K on a set of Cooper ST and still have 50%+ of the tread left. Good traction, hold up well under load. I know a towing company that use them on their Dodge, Ford, and Chevy 1 tons due to their durability...
