Competition Diesel Power Challenge 2006 Dvd

Off Roading 4Wheel Parts Offroad mag

Alright guys, gonna take the new truck to the track this weekend but need some advice on the best way to launch it. I had no problem doing it in my automatic, or my 5 speed mustang. Just cant get a good feel for doing it in a 6 speed diesel. I am mainly worried that I am going to roll and get a red light. Just want to kinda get some baseline numbers. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

In my 6 speed Corvette I have staged using the console mounted E-brake instead of a Line-lock roll-control, which is complicated to install with ABS.

Using a foot E-brake for roll-control might be a little more tricky, but it might save you a redlight, just a thought. (Maybe install an extension of some type on the release lever?)

I would be curious to know how shifting the G-56 works out, mine is not a fast shifter at all.

Good Luck, Ray

Well I have tried using the foot mounted one when launching on the streets and it works, but I dont think I will have enough time with staging and all, especially if I am up against another diesel that doesnt do a burnout. My mustang was the same way as your corvette, console mounted ebrake.

4x4 or 4x2?

My '99 - 4x2 3. 54LSD 5-spd w/DD Stage III injectors, DDUFM fueling box and SB clutch setup - launched best in 2nd gear at approx 1600 rpm - keeping rpm below approx 2000 to control wheelspin until I cleared the tree & then on the floor, shifting hard @ 3150 rpm. Trying to launch any harder simply melted the tires. It's the same old trick - pushing the tires to the fine line where traction is there, but just about to go away. Takes a lot of practice on street tires with the Cummins' power. Would run mid-14's @ 96-98mph like this. Terrible 60' times, but take off like a jet on afterburn when I hit 3rd gear. Surprised a couple of automatic Chevy p/u's one night. They didn't think the old man could shift a 3/4 ton diesel 5-spd like I can. Not only stayed with them off the line, but ran away from them when I hit 3rd.

I have a 4x4. and am mainly concerned with rolling and tripping the red light.

Find the point where the clutch is completely disengaged. Then bolt/tape a SSL block under the clutch pedal to limit its travel to exactly that distance. That'll give you better and more consistent clutch control.

If the clutch is fully disengaged, the truck shouldn't roll once you have staged. Of course, all bets are off if the track isn't level. :)

Try running at 2500 RPM while staged, then let the engine drop to 1600 RPM when you let the clutch in. That should have the turbo spinning a little faster at the start, building boost quicker.

It ain't sled pulling. You don't need to build boost before you launch. :) :)

My best times came by holding the brake with my right heal, about 2500rpm, and loading the clutch to build about 8 pounds of boost. Leaving in 4x4 in second gear the clutch would not hold third. This is with my old LUK, I will have a new SBC double next week and will thy new methods.
