I m going to Alabama in May for my sisters wedding and on the way back Im gonna stop and pick up my friends Mercedes and Im gonna use a car trailer from u-haul will that trailer have brakes and if so I will have to get a box in my cab for trailer brakes is it hard to install and what box do you recommend thanks for the help!

I just towed a U-Haul car trailer with my sister's Jetta on it from San Francisco to Medford, OR. The trailer had surge brakes - no need for a brake controller in the truck - & towed just fine. The wiring connection on U-Haul trailers is 4 separate bullet connectors on the trailer with conversion pigtails available to go to a standard flat 4 connector. They charge ~$4 for the adapter pig tail.

Just make sure that U-Haul dealer doesn't give you a piece of junk trailer. Check out the ramps, tie down straps, lights that work, and make SURE the brakes work. U-Haul put a lot of junk out on the road these days IMO.

Sounds like to me this would be a good excuse to buy a trailer for yourself. Then you get to add more goodies to pull a big load.

I've used U-haul vehicle transporters several times.

The surge brakes work pretty well to keep the trailer from passing you in everything 'cept "OHMYGAWD" stops. ;)

One further comment, WATCH THE LOT JOCKEY WHEN HE HOOKS YOU UP TO THE TRAILER.

Or better yet, have him watch you hook it up.

It's always better to triple-check all connections, than to get down the road, look in the rearview mirror and go:--)

I second the comment on U-Haul putting a lot of junk on the road. Do yourself a favor & show up early to check over the equipment they want to give you. Once it leaves their area, it becomes another delaers problem to take care of. Also Keep your receipts! I rented two trucks from them this past summer to move my Mother from Phoenix, AZ to Spokane, WA, I turned the trucks in as agreed at the place they specified. About a month later, I got a certified letter telling me I was in possesion of stolen property for not returning the trucks:mad: Still had my rental return receipts:D after receiving copies of those receipts, they had a change of mind. Good luck on your run. Don't forget to investigate the cost of buying your own new hauler & selling it for the diff

( ie: the cost- the rental cost) when you get back.
