If you can't stop the leak from the Transfer/transmission

Need help with my sons 06 Liberty. He is having starting problems. Takes more rpm's to finally start. Fuel filter was new 3 months ago and has had a little DS run through it, not much. You can hear the pump run and stop.

My advise, take fuel sample for water, and change filter again and maybe add some other additive to MAYBE take care of water? if present.

What do you CRD owners say?????

Thanks Guys

Mine got hard to crank when I first started using the WVO blend in it. In my case, it was the "detergentcy" of the cooking oil that cleaned the tank and lines, thus clogging the fuel filter. The little transfer pump on these thing seems a bit weak. It does not have enough balls to pump more than about a 30% blend of WVO/diesel. Any restriction seems to make cranking harder.

Well they use Tosoro fuel, so there is not any WVO. I recommended to change the filter again, haven't heard the latest yet.

Check the fuel system for air leaks, as I believe they run under a vacuum, unless your son added a lift pump. I've read that these leaks happen often around the fuel heater.

I had a 2005 CRD and I started having problems starting the jeep. I took it in, had the code read was told it read massive fuel leak. They cleared the code because they couldn't locate the fuel leak. They made mad enough that it got traded in on a 2007 quad cummins. Have them check the fuel heater at the filter and install a lift pump if one is not already installed. Go to Liberty Owners Speacialty Team (L. O. S. T) on the net. It is a group simular to TDR. On a good note I loved the jeep it was fun pulling up to the diesel pump for fuel and be told that I was using the wrong fuel and not be sold the diesel... I miss the jeep. Also if you have problems with the battery there is a procedure for trouble shooting, but you'll need to have a good relationship with the dealership for help

This is what I learned tonite. While cruising@ 40 mph no power, won't accelerate. Pulls to the side of road and turns off the engine. Starts, seems ok. drives ok. Tonite it fired after some cranking and then quit. more cranking for7-8 seconds and then fires. @2-3K rpm seems to have a miss fire. Idle is smooth. Bad injector? not firing, bad filter? ECM? I'll have him pull the dip stick and check for fuel smell/high oil level.

EXACTLY what mine did with a clogged fuel filter (mine was from the initial cooking oil blend). I changed the fuel filter and have had no more problems.

First, the liberty has no lift pump stock. It is a negative pressure system and it is prone to suck air. Most likely the faulty fuel heater has melted (the smaller plug on the filter head that is more to the driver's side). But it can leak anywhere. Negative pressure fuel leak; you have to find it. Positive pressure; it finds you. Could just be a clogged filter but could be a leak or both. A common mod is to add a lift pump. It is actually wired for one to the connector under the back seat. Even has a fuse in the panel. I changed out my fuel canister with pump from my 06 to the liberty. Also put in a Stanadyne FM100 filter head with 2 micron filter. Works great. (The liberty fuel canister is in my 06 now to solve the 1/4 tank air sucking problem you get with the aftermarket fuel pump. )

Appreciate all the suggestions. He looked and found no fuel pump, so I guess this is true

But the dealership got him a new improved fuel heater and every thing is good again. The improvement is that the wire connections are heavy duty and will handle the current required. Should he still unplug the heater part? I guess that the MIL/check engine light, is the smaller of the two connecters? He undone both wires and the light came on. So am I right about the smaller wire?

Thanks again for your help.

The fuel heater is on quit a bit of the time. I don't remember the temps but I think it cuts out at some ridiculously high temp. I'd probably unplug it if no MIL in summer. The Stanadyne heater I use has it's own thermostat so it doesn't matter.

Thanks Tinman didn't know that any other heater was available. Just thought dealer was the only source. Is the Stanadyne expensive? I know he had to buy the one he installed from the dealer and it was not cheap. Least its on the road again with no problems.

If you search the LOST forum you'll see a lot of different aftermarket fuel filter setups. I choose the Stanadyne system. Many others have been used such as Racor and even our stock Cummins filter heads. Here is what I got:

Head;

36694 Stanadyne Fuel Manager FM100 Final filter Assembly with 1/4" NPTF ports & 2. 8" 2-micron element (36693)

Heater;

31341 Stanadyne Fuel Manager FM100 Heater Kit - 100 Watt - Top Load 12 volt

The only other thing you'll need is a fuel temp sensor. Let me know if you interested and I'll dig up that part #

Thanks Tinman for that info. I've copied it and will relay it to him for future reference. If want the other number I'll give you a holler. Looks like your set up might be cheaper than his was.
