Need help on deciding what way to go first at the shop: Pull the head or pull the camshaft?

We are dealing with the knock detailed in this thread:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...dge-5-9-diesel-NV5600-knock-tap-clatter-Ideas

Shop says the knock goes away when they zero out the lash on the #6 exhaust (or intake I forget) with the engine warmed up. Said they did so with the engine running and have added a gal of oil doing so. They can't get a good look at anything lifter wise on the #6 with a boroscope.

Head is painted grey. It's been off for some reason. Valve lash was done at 98,000 as well as: cooling fan, hoses by PO. IMO Something happened at 98,000. It has 118K on it now I got it at 101,000 and it ticked from day 1.

Shop says it's going to be expensive from this point on and they suspect a lifter problem. It sounds like a lifter/valve train noise. Least it isn't fuel injection related! I asked the shop for an estimate/combo to do what it takes - I mean the folks doing the work need to be paid - but we are at exploratory surgery now.

So do I guess bad head work done and pull the head off?

Or do I gamble that the head work didn't fix the problem and go for the camshaft?

While we are there anything we should do? (Freshen up etc.)

Bump! Other thread updated.
Head is off. Is this oil we are seeing with the extreme carbon deposits?

Only optional question is sending out and testing injectors.
