Ok guys, I need some advice.

I took the wifes truck down to have the C44 transmission line recall done, while at the same time having the ECM reflashed for the 18-004-04 high idle done.

Well the dealer reflashed the ecm, but for some reason they are too stuborn to enble the high idle. What can I do?

I called the dealer this morning to let them know that the high idle feature does not work and that I want to bring the truck back down to have this enabled. I told them that I think that they just have to plug in the DRB and enable it, being that they have already done the software upgrade.

Well apparently, he didn't like the fact that I knew as much as him about these trucks and started getting beligerant with me, telling me that if this was not a feature that did not come originally installed on the truck that they can not change the programming and turn it on. So I told him that I gave them the complete TSB, including instructions on how to turn this on and that this information came straight from Chrysler. I told him that I don't understand why he can not comply under what chryslers information, but I will be there monday morning so that we can get this fixed.

Is there anything that I can do, before I go down there and have to get a chrysler tech on the phone to get this resolved.

Thanks

Kev

You might have to try another dealer.

2 weeks ago (Friday) I took mine in for the first oil change (free) and the transmission line recall.

I mentioned the TSB by number and told the service writer what it was for. He said they would check it out and do it if it applied to my truck. I also asked for a copy of the TSB.

In a few minutes (I waited for the truck), the service writer came out with a copy of the TSB and told me that it did apply to my truck (duh!) and they would do it free of charge.

2 hours later my truck was ready and I left, only to discover the high idle would not work per the TSB.

The following Monday morning, I stopped in and told the service writer that I thought the tech did the flash but forgot to enable the feature. In a few minutes, the service manager himself took my truck into the shop. 10 minutes later, he brought it back and was anxious to show me (and the service writer) how it worked. I had the feeling it was the first one they had done -- you would've thought it was the service manager's personal truck.

I was the first one at my dealer to do this TSB. The service manager acually did it to his truck after I called up there to see if they could do it. Well after I droped off my truck to get it fixed they didnt do it so I had to track down the service manager after they guy at the counter told me pretty much the same as you. The SM hooked up the DRB and when he turned on the option it didnt work. He ended up having to reflash the computer and turn it on at the same time to get it to work. So if they try to tell you that it dosent work tell them to reflash and turn it on at the same time.

Hope you can get it worked out becuse I reallly like having it on mine.

Once your ECM is reflashed, it's just a matter of them turning the feature on with the DRB III. It only takes them about a minute to enable.

If your dealer reflashed based on the TSB, they are getting paid by DCX . 8 hours. If they didn't enable the feature, they are getting paid by DCX for something they did not complete, which is fraud. So if he wants to push it, report him to DCX for not fixing your slow cab heat issue and also being rude to you.

I don't think they want DCX to know they are charging them for services they did not complete, nor do they want the publicity of of being rude. You might want to push the issue with the general manager 1st.

BTW, if I were you, I'd just drive up there and ask them to finish what they should have done in the 1st place. Any one with access to the DRBIII can enable it just by following the instructions on the TSB.

Thanks for the input guys, Hopefully this dealer gets this completed and I don't have to escalate it.

One other question though. Is this high idle temperature dependant? If this dealer drives my truck around or it is warm tomorrow, can I not test it until the engine is cold again, or does this high idle work at any temp?

Thanks

No. It will work any time, regardless of engine or ambient temperature.

I have tested it at 75 deg right after coming off the highway. Don't let anyone tell you different... it works any time.

So far I haven't really needed this feature, but it's nice to know it'll be there when I do. :)

Best of luck getting yours working.

Like Bob said, the feature is not temp dependent. So it'll work once the feature is activated.

One thing I did noticed that was different from before the flash is this. Before the flash, if I hit the cruise control on button, it would not come on.

What I mean is that the cruise indicator on the dash would not light up at idle. With the feature, the crusie light comes on at idle. Also when I click the set button to turn feature on, it's not instant. I have to give it a couple seconds for the idle to ramp up.

I don't think it really takes a couple of seconds for the idle to ramp up, but being in an instant gratification world, I expected the idle to ramp up faster.

Joe,

That seems strange to me. I'm pretty sure my cruise indicator always lit up if I turned it on at idle.

Also, I just went out and double-checked on my truck. If I hold the set button in, nothing happens. As soon as I release it, the engine begins to ramp up to 1100 RPM. There =might= be a 1/4 second delay.

I think the general consensus is that it only works on '04's.

As I understand it, the '03's have a Cummins ECM and a DC PCM. The '04's have a newer Cummins ECM and no PCM. That makes the computer code incompatible between the two.

Hopefully somebody will help me out if I've got that wrong.

Oh well... . Mine runs good anyways and automaticaaly goes to 1000 rpm if its cold after a short bit... . Immediately if its real cold and I start with no plug in like at work

Hey guys,

I have never heard of this before, but it sound like a good feature. Does it work on the 04. 5? And how do I make it happen?

Any info appeciated!

Thanks,

Fred

Cool, then at least I can print out this thread and take it with me to show them that there is a problem.

Last question. If the dealer for some odd reason can not get this fixed, does anybody know of any place in which I would be able to burrow a DRB III to turn this on myself (i. e. Automotive store or anything?)

Thanks once again.

Kev

Wow Kev, both you and Jamie have new trucks, congrats! I'm still poking around in my '99. Not too much use for the high idle feature in San Diego anyway... ;)

According to the TSB it only applies to engines built before Dec 10, 2003. I think that would exclude the '04. 5's. :(

I've been wondering if the '04. 5's have the feature already. You can check out the TSB at this link:

http://www.portjeff.net/df5152/tsb_1800404.htm

It tells exactly how to use the feature once it's enabled. How about giving it a try on your truck and let us know if it works?

Thanks Bob,

I am going to read the TSB and go out in the garage and see if it works. I will report back in a hour.

Hope it works!Oo. Oo. Oo.

Where you been Mikey? I wrote you and e-mail in reply to yours but I have not heard back.

OK, I printed out the TSB and went out to the truck.

It doesn't seem to work, but by the TSB, maybe it's just not enabled. I will check it out next time I am at the dealer.

Thanks for the info guys!

Thanks for giving it a try and satisfying my curiosity. Please let everyone know what you find out at the dealer.

There's a lot of interest in this. It really s**ks if this feature turns out to only be available for 1/2 a model year. Still, it's nice to be one of the lucky ones for once! ;)
