Well guys, here's an update.

I finally was able to get the truck to the dealer today. The head service manager is more then willing to work with us to get this problem resolved.

Here is where my confusion comes in. The SM grabbed his diesel tech and the DRB III scanner. He hooked the scanner up to my wifes truck and it shows that the High Idle feature is enabled, though none of us could get this to work. So I asked him about being able to reflash the ecm and then turn the feature one. Unfortunately his DRB would not let him reflash the ECM, because it has the latest version of software that the DRB has...

So then I asked him if he could hook it up to my truck to see what happens. Same thing, my truck has the high idle enabled, but it does not work via the cruise control.

This tells me that this dealer just does not have the latest revision of software correct? So they are calling Star tomorrow to figure out what to do... .

Does anybody have any idea of what revision of software this is in the TSB so that I can pass it on to them?

Thanks

Kev

What I THINK I understand from the TSB is that when they load the new software, it changes the part number. New part number = new software.

Did they check your part number (as reported by the DRBIII) against the TSB?

Why you have 2 trucks that won't do it is a complete mystery to me... Unless of course the dealer messed up. The more I think about it, that's the only plausable explanation.

Has this dealer enabled it for anyone else?

He dealer pulled up the TSB, along with the printed copy that I gave them. Neither of them specify what software revision is needed. They did reflash the trucks to the newest revision, that they possess... so my guess, is that the dealer is still a revision behind or two.

Hopefully when they call star, they get this figured out. That is why i was wondering if anybody knew what version of software, so that I can at least feed this to the dealer, so that they know what to ask for.

As far as them doing this for anybody else... nope, I'm the first. LOL

Kev

Yeah I've printed that thing out several times for the dealer. . lol

So I guess I'm just in a state of confusing, Are those part numbers the actual software numbers? I thought they were specific Cummins ECM part numbers.

Well, guys, I finally got this thing to work. The dealer called star yesterday and star pointed out to the dealer that the flash was a different part number, exactly what you guys were talking about.

So finally they reflashed the truck to the new software and whoola it works. They totally were apologetic. . lol. They have my truck now to reflash and enable the high idle :D :D

I do have one observation right off hand though. I am not sure which part number they relfashed my wifes truck with, but the truck sure does seem to have a higher idle (bout 850 rpms), plus the truck seems to have a ton more power in the midrange. Is this typical? Driving home yesterday, I slowed down for one corner, manually shifted the auto trans to 2nd, stepped on the go pedal and the tires broke loose. I haven't been able to break my tires looks yet while driving. Usually I have to power brake it. Now, 2nd and 3rd gear have loads of power...

K_Arts,

I had the reflash done also and noticed that my idle went from 700 to 750. Also the motor is quietier now, but the power seems the same. One other thing that happened is that I got over 21mpg on my 1st full tank of fuel after the reflash. Not sure if the increase in milage is related to the reflash, but I'm extremely happy with it.

BTW, for those wondering if the adjustable high idle feature is available on there trucks... Only '04's with the auto have a reflash available to enable it. The Cummins 600 and the '03's are capable but the programing is not there to enable the feature.

My understanding is that all the ISB 5. 9s shipped with the HPCR can have the feature. It's just up to the manufacturer if they want to add the additional programming to allow it.

K_Arts,

That's great news!

I haven't noticed any change in power, mileage, or noise. I've got 8,000 miles now (in 2-1/2 months!?) and the truck is noiser now than it started out. Still pretty quiet, though.

Bob,

I definately want to Thank you for your help with my trucks, you've had some awesome advice to help me... :D

Though just a quick update. I just picked up my truck today and same results as the wifes. The High Idle works, and boy does the truck have more power. Actually it looks like I may have to take it back to the dealer tomorrow.

I did a brief powerbrake (about 1500 RPMS) off of the line at a stop light. Boy did my truck take off, after I took off, my tires broke loose and then when they finally got traction again, it sounded like something in the transmission broke... oops. Thank goodness it's under warranty. Though it sucks if I broke something, cause the truck only has 1500 miles on it... :D :D

Regretfully, I have to throw my report in here. Took the truck in today for the C44 recall. Had the high idle reflash done at the same time. Don't really need it down here in Key West where the record low is 45. SM asked me about why I wanted it. Go to Michigan to visit the kids and grandkids at Christmas. Anyway, they did the reflash. At least there is a sticker is on the core support saying they did it. Doesn't work. Should have tried it in the parking lot before I left. It's going back in tomorrow. I'll give the tech a copy of the TSB. I suspect it's the "Forgot to Enable" problem that many others have reported.

Also, make sure they check the part number of the Reflash. The problem with mine was that they were reflashing my truck with their newest reflash. . not the one listed on the TSB.

My problem turned out to be my own fault. When trying the feature out, I had my foot on the brake pedal!!! Guess it's just habit. When I took the truck back in, the Service writer did the same thing. Checking out my report. When it didn't work for him, he took it back to the tech. About 10 minutes later, he came up to the waiting room looking for me. We want back to service. Tech said it worked after he did the flash. Had me get in & walked me thru it. Didn't work. Told me to take my foot off the brake pedal & it would. A laugh on me! so, a heads up for others whose flash doesn't seem to work. Make sure you don't have your foot on the brake pedal!

If they are reluctant to enable this flash, just tell them what I told them... .

"It's the wifes truck and she doesn't like it being so cold... . now if you don't want to enable the feature then give me your home phone number and I will have her call YOU every cold morning to complain, because I can't take it anymore (by the way she is REAL mean)"... . :p

Guess what, no more questions asked and it was done... . :D
