I have 99 2500 2 wheel drive. I just replaced stock tires 245/75/r16 with 265/75/r16. They are mounted on 16x8 Ultra rims. The tires are rubbing on the plastic wheel well liner. I thought there would be no problem running 265s.

Facts: I need new shocks

The rubbing is not major, but not acceptable either

I do not want to put any type of lift on a two wheel drive truck

What can I do to fix the rubbing? Could the worn out shocks be letting the front-end sag a little?

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks. wm

A shocks job is to dampen spring movement. To my knowledge even removing the shocks shouldn't affect ride hight. Try a search on coil springs and see what comes up. I think some members have had good luck with Moog replacement front springs.

Check the back spacing on the rims. Ultra's tend to stick way out. You might need to get rims with back spacing closer to stock.

I'm not convinced that backspacing is the problem. The rubbing is occuring on my wheel well about half way up the tire. Pulling the tire into the wheel well or pushing it out with different backspacing won't change the forward or backward spacing of my tire. It is like I need a very very small lift to put the center of the tire lower in relation to the wheel well, but I can search the archives and see that 265/75/16 should fit on a stock 99 2500.

I would certainly buy the backspacing issue if I was rubbing on the inside of the wheel at full turn. Convince me otherwise, please.

By the way I am installing Ranch 5000 front shocks on Saturday and replacing my disc brake pads with Performance Friction Carbon metallic pads at the same time. I know this will not resolve my problem. But do have other ideas. My rubbing is very little.

Thanks for the help and please offer up any more ideas please.

Join the rub club Wayne! I have 265/75/16's and they rub. I know of at least 2 other TDR members whe have the same setup. They rub too. Mine only rub in a hard turn when the truck rolls into it. I also have custom front springs that lift the truck about 1 inch over stock. That helps. Other than that... ... they're gonna rub. I have Rancho 9000's too. Shocks won't help.

Is it rubbing when the suspension loads or only during turns? Seems 265 would be alittle large for a 2 wheel drive but then again... I have 315 with no lift. (4X4) Proud member of the RUB CLUB. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thanks for the input.

I am rubbing so little I am thinking of removing a little of the wheel well, ie making it a little thinner where it rubs. Well I am off to get to work on the upgrades..... wm

I took a utility knife and cut about 5" off the back liner:eek: and have been pretty much rub free for three years now. 35-12. 50-16. 5's no lift

Pushing the tire out further increases the scrub radius and makes rubbing on the fender liner more likely.

Got the new Performance friction pads on the brakes, changed my shocks and did some work on the wheel well.

I have stopped my rubbing except on very extreme situations. I pulled the liner back, ie, attached wire to liner and pulled the liner back toward the cab of truck. I anchored the wire on one of the braces under my truck that holds my nerf bars on. So far it works.

I recently upgraded to 285/75/16 BFG's on American racing alloy mod's... had to cut out the black plastic fender shields, ... gently "hammer" back the seams to the front fender mounts so they were 90 degrees towards the truck rather than parallel with the wheels... also had the front end lifted 2" with coil lift spring spacers and Rancho 9000 shocks... . made a big difference in the ride and handling with Lance camper in back. It's much more stable now...

Now going to order fender flares to offset the distance the tires stick out to eliminate "stone dings".

Really made a big difference in how the truck looks as well...

Hope this helps, and good luck!
