Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Pressure Question

I just went to pull my truck in the driveway tonight and when I started it, it had a funny whinning sound coming from the motor. I went to shut it off and it kind of shut off but stayed running slightlyand still whining. Fuel pressure is at 20psi which is where it alway's is. I turned the ignition forward as if to start the truck, and it went back to normal idle"still whining though". I tried to shut it off 3 times and it finally did. I called a buddy and he said he's heard of the fuel shut off solenoid going bad. My truck has 146k on it. Could this be the problem, and if so, where is it, how much and is it hard to fix! This scared the crap out of me. I've had enough problem's in the past 3 year's. Oh and could this hurt the injection pump. Please help, thank's:confused:

shut off solenoid is on 12 valves not 24s, starter may have hung up and is back feeding voltage! Genos sells upgrade for cheap!

On my 01 i had the starter solenoid stick and the starter wouldn't disengage. Truck sounded funny at start up but... the motors are so loud didn't really really think much of it. Drove about 5 min and pulled over to check it out, tried to shut it off and it wouldn't really shut off. Had to disconnect both batt to get it to stop.

I have only heard of the fuel solenoid issue on the 12v and older.

The fuel shut off solenoid is on 12 valve engines only. On 12 valves if the starter solenoid plunger gets stuck because of worn contact points causing the starter to continue to run (while engine is running) electricity will back to feed to the fuel shut off solenoid so engine will not turn off by key until plunger is returned to original position.

Your starter could of kept running because of worn contact points but I don't know what it would of back fed into to keep your engine running.

Wine is heard, rpms drop and engine cannot be turned off by key.

Something electrical definitely kept your engine running. I would think the ECM or VP44. See if computer set any codes.

From the sound that I heard, that would make sense that the starter was hung up, keeping the motor turning. It seemed like the motor was spinning with no firing in the cylinders. Can I just go get a starter from NAPA or is it something else triggering it to stay on. The cheaper, the better. I don't want to order something and wait if I don't have to. Thank's guy's, I did'nt think of that.

just a point of speculation but isnt there some sort of fuel shutoff inside the pump or somewhere in the fuel system. just the way a diesel works you have to have a fuel shut off to make it turn off. what do the 24v use

I'm a simple person who keeps it simple---just look at my truck--very simple.....

really though the 24V just uses the ignition--turn key off--that's our fuel shutoff solenoid---if truck still runs after key is off then you need to uncork the battery cables and if that doesn't do it you need to shut down the air supply--shutting down air supply is the quickest though---chris

Thank's guy's, I took the starter out today and I'm ordering the kit from Larry B's. Hope it work's or I'll have to start carrying a bannana for the tail pipe!:) I was ready to put a whole new starter in, but I took it back. $35 sound's alot better than $200! Thank's!

Just pull the ignition fuse #9 to stop it.

now hold on ya'll i dont wanna hijack the thread but i dont think ya'll get it the key is electrical it drives a solenoid that cuts the fuel to shut off the truck. simply it has to really no other way to do it. what happens when you pull the batt. cables is you cut power to the fuel soleniod and the shuts off the truck. every rotary pump that i know about has them why would these pumps be any different

Mhannink, when you turn key to "off" position it turns off power to fuel (lift) pump ECM,VP44.

On the 12 valve they use fuel shut off solenoid because of the mechanical fuel (lift) pump.
