Fuel pressure? From where?

Hello,

I am having problems getting my local dealer to fix my truck. The truck does the following

1. Upon first start in the morning in surges in park and idles rough for 15-20 secs and then acts fine.

2. Has almost 0 power when first starting out in the morning,

3. The truck has become loud, it has the normal clatter clatter of a CR CTD, but it also rattles, and is quite a bit louder around 2K RPM.

4. The truck does not smoke or otherwise run rough.

5. There is not diesel in the oil

6. My oil was changed 5K miles ago and is now BLACK and has the consistency of TAR, it will not even flow down the dipstick.

What in the heck is wrong with this thing??? Does anyone know?? The tech thought it may be injectors, but according to him DC will not send parts to them. Has anyone else had these symptoms... PLEASE HELP :{

Stock truck? Did you try changing the oil to see if it quiets it down, the no power and rough idle at startup sound normal, I think the ECM limits fuel when the engine is cold to protect it. I have noticed the limited power when trying to pull into traffic right after starting, the rough idle seems more pronouced when it is below 20.

Koopdaddy, sounds fairly NORMAL, IMO.

In this very cold weather (below 20*, after a good cold soak), my trucks idles rough the first 30 seconds to 1 minute. Not alot of power until a couple minutes.

Not saying that you may not have anything wrong, but what you're experiencing is what many of us have been in the cold weather. Where are you located? If you're in the tropics, ignore what I just said!

I live in Arizona, coldest temps are around 40 degrees

Well then, I agree, I think you may have an injector bad. Should not be running rough in those temperatures. Why don't you let the dealer have it overnight (if possible), so they can do a cold start in the morning?

I'm in Southern California, it was 39 this morning. Truck does not really idle rough, but it does appear it is a tad louder than when new... . and it does take forever to warm up, and about 5 minutes until the power is "normal", no smoke either... . Is there really that big of a difference between 20 and 40 degrees? It's still pretty damn cold... . I think the manual differentiates above and below 60...

:-laf Didn't you just take alot of goodies off your truck? There's no question about what it is... ... The poor thing is going through some serious withdrawal!! Put everything back on and all will be fine. :-laf

Yeah, compared to tst, ez, and super b turbo, I'm sure it feels like it has no power. Haha. As for the tar like oil - dunno about that one - but sounds scary.

Has the transfer pump volume been checked? If it has not, should be checked . I have replaced a couple for low volume and will affect performance and timing. The other thing is TSB 18-37-04 applies to engines built up to 8-17-04 up to engine #57246361. It is a reflash on ECM for fuel economy improvement and driveability below 50 degrees.

Everything you listed I had and it was injectors.

So here's the original list, I dont understand the problem?? I'm a newbie so please be patient...

1. Upon first start in the morning in surges in park and idles rough for 15-20 secs and then acts fine.

Couldn't this be the heater grid kicking in?

2. Has almost 0 power when first starting out in the morning,

Isn't this normal? Fuel cutoff to prevent over working a cold motor?

3. The truck has become loud, it has the normal clatter clatter of a CR CTD, but it also rattles, and is quite a bit louder around 2K RPM.

My problem is i dont know what it should sound like... and I'm deaf out of one ear... .

4. The truck does not smoke or otherwise run rough.

Ok, this is normal correct?

5. There is not diesel in the oil

Assume normal?

6. My oil was changed 5K miles ago and is now BLACK and has the consistency of TAR, it will not even flow down the dipstick

Ok, that's the only thing I see that's not normal

Someone please help me figure out what I'm not understanding... . so I can figure out if I need to take mine in as it behaves the same...

Thanks for your inputs

Damn power went out for the 3rd time in 2 weeks... . and we're in a city... . pain in the ***! Hope this still sends... thank god for laptps!

It sounds like you have a Cummins Diesel, this can be found under your hood.

Everything sounds normal.

Black oil, that means its working!

Try parking it facing out of the driveway. I have intermittent issues with no power in reverse. Start it up, wait 15 to 20 seconds, put it in reverse, no power up to and past 1/2 throttle, truck won't move. I have to back off and try again and then it will move. Had some sort of trans reflash which altered 4th gear shift when cold but did not cure my issue. Black oil is the norm in this engine. Mine is black with 500 miles of a change.
