come on guys--I need to get these rear chrome centers off today---trying to put mud flaps on!! thanks, R

it just looks like I will tear them up--god how you do change a flat on the side off the road--heaven forbid!!

Don't worry about trying to take that center cap off, it'll come off with the rest of the cover. You need a good sized screw driver, pry in between the cover and the wheel working it off. Just be careful while you are prying, you want to make sure what ever you are prying with has a good bite behind the cover as it is just a thin piece of shiny metal over plastic.

I actually took a flat head screw driver and heated the end and bent it to a j shape. I slip that end in behind the center cap and pull. It pops the cap loose, then take the outer ring off. Then I just tossed the screw driver in the glove box so I know where it is for future use.

I just want to say MANY THANKS, to both of you---once I tried what phloop suggested, it was a snap. I was trying to pry off the center cap off first--with out a proper tool.

Glad to see you got the help you needed. I always do it the way phloop suggested, never had any troubles. However, why do you need to remove the wheels to install the mud flaps? Are they the Mopar ones or something different. I've installed the same set twice and never removed a wheel. Of course I did it differently than the instructions show, wanted them lower.

to answer your question---yes they were the Mopar/diamond plate. They had to have the some holes drilled, and the tires were in the way. Thank god got it done today--and yesterday I lowered the rear end----damn my arms are tired--no impact!!!

thanks to all who make this a great site--R

You have room in your glove box?

I just pried the outter ring off and the center pops off and rolls around on the ground. I tried to take the center off first but it wasn't hooked good and the plastic chipped. I didn't remove the wheels either.

Hmmm, on my 96, part of the factory lug wrench had a small hooked end just for the purpose of taking off the wheel covers... worked perfectly. Guess I'll find out soon if that's the case on my 05.

My glove box is in the back (I know - I just looked and it has lots of gloves in it :-laf - that's why I got a toolbox)

Anyway, my tire changing toolkit (that came with the truck) has a bar with a hooked end on it just for the center caps. Maybe you just missed it?
