Does it blow white smoke when the outside temp. is warmer? Does it only occur in the morning or after the truck has sat all day at work? Does it run good all the time except for the first start?

Like I said, it runs perfect all the time! Lots of power and no smoke. It just blows lots and lots of blue/white smoke when I start it in the morning. I mean lots! It has been around 60 deg in the morning since this started so I can't say anything else about the morning starting. When I leave for work in the afternoon, it doesn't seem to smoke any more than normal.

I am wondering if an injector is leaking?

I am thinking of letting Cummins check it out because I don't know of any other good diesel mechanic in Phoenix. But, they won't put anything except original injectors, so I will consider changing them myself if I can get some information about were to buy them.

Thanks,
Tim

Get in touch with Joe Donnelly. He can
help you with a set of 215 injectors.

Mine smoke in the morning too. When it's cold enough for the grid heater to come on, it doesn't smoke. For the first 200 yards or so, it keeps the bugs out of my neighborhood. Don't worry about it.

My truck has never smoked liked this before Sunday. So, I am going to continue investigating what has changed to cause this all of a sudden.

I guess I can't get Cummins to check it out because they have to take each injector out to check it on the bench. It looks like it would be cheaper to just buy new injectors.

Thanks,
Tim

As a newby to the diesel world, I gotta ask the dumb questions. My questions here relate to my gasser experience.

Black smoke == too much fuel, too rich mixture
Blue smoke == burning oil
White smoke == water ( steam ). Could be cooling leak.

What causes white smoke in a diesel. Assuming blue and black are the same.

I have seem many gassers with high mileage, do the blue ( oil ) smoke when starting cold. Always was worn valve stem seals. OK when hot and running. Let sit while warm still no problem. Let sit and cool down and oil drips past the seal in to the combustion chamber. Next cold start blows the big blue cloud until the oil in the chamber burns off. Diesels to anything like this? Or any related type problems?

Sly,
You are right on the black smoke. But White and Blue smoke is partially ,or not completely burned Diesel fuel.

Blue and White and most noticable in very cold and in 60-70 degree temps , when its not cold enough to trigger the intake heaters, yet not warm enough to get a clean burn on a stone cold engine.

Did you buy your fuel at the same place all the time?
Mine smokes a bit in the morning too. I'm not worried.

Tim,
Are you also having a slightly longer crank time on first start? Sounds like you may have a fuel return hose going bad, common for your vintage truck. Reach behind motor on driver's side near top of block, should feel two hoses, grab on to smaller one. If it is wet, cracked, or stretches, it is bad and lets injection pump siphen down introducing air into system.
Tip for changing this hose: if you are short and stocky(like me), drop inner splash shield from left wheel well and reach in above frame. You tall, lean guys only have to reach through past master cylinder.
Good luck.

Monday morning (60 degrees) my truck blew lots of white/blue smoke until I had rev'ed the engine up to 1500 RPM, then it was gone. Otherwise, it still runs great. At the end of the day, I only see a little puff when I head home. But, this morning it again blew lots of smoke until I rev'ed it up.

Is this an injector problem? I have 132K miles on the truck with stock injectors.

If it is the injectors, then I was wanting to upgrade to the 215 injectors. Were can I get a set of NEW Bosch 215 injectors?

Thanks,
Tim

Problem solved with Cummins diesel additive!

When it got up to 65 degrees as a low temparature and the truck still blew white/blue smoke when I started it in the morning, I determined that it was an injector and started looking to get a new set. Then I stopped by Cummins to get some filters and thought about putting in some of there diesel additive to see if it helped.

Two days later and the smoke when I start it is virtually gone!

I guess this is a testimony for the diesel additives that I have always thought was a scam.

Also, has any Phoenix dewellers got any advise on the diesel shops in the area other than the Cummins shop?

Thanks,
Tim

I did as recommended on the additive. 8 oz in a 35 gal tank of diesel.
