I bought a hayes brake controller, The controller has a red white blue and black wire. the pigtail that came with my new truck also has a red white blue and black wire. I guess my mistake was splicing red to red white to white ,ect. Plugged it in when done and smoked the controller. Now looking at the wireing diagram looks like red should have spliced to black [hot] white should have spliced to red,and black to white. I went to the rv store and looked at the instructions on a tekonsha controller and it seems to be the same way. I am confused, why wouldn't the pigtail from dodge and the controllers have their wire colors match each other. Has anyone else figured this out. I want to make sure I have it right this time before I plug it in and smoke another controller.

I agree it's confusing. I think the controlers have standardized color codes but Dodge doesn't. I've never smoked one but have gotten a headache double checking the wiring. Good luck on your new one.

I've had my Tekonsha on two trucks and the instructions will tell you exactly what wire to spice where. It took about 15 minutes and a few scotchlocks. It works great!

Folks,
When I installed my Tekonsha voyager controller to the factory supplied pigtail harness, the wires on both the pigtail and controller were marked. The controller had the wires marked in silver letters and the connector had pieces of tape on them denoting which connection to make. I have also learned from past experiences that going by color codes does not always apply.
Found that the location for the factory harness connection is kind of a pain to get to and hook up #ad
. But once you do it, thats it!
Happy Dieseling!

Don't feel bad Bill, I did the same thing. Don't know what I was thinking (I guess I wasn't thinking!!) It smoked the controler big time. The controler had a 5 year warrentee, so the dealer exchanged it for me.
But I don't have the wiring diagram with me, its up in the mountains in my camper.

Don't know about Hayes controller but here is the wiring diagram for Tekonsha. This only goes up to 99 Dodge, don't know if 01 is the same. From the truck pigtail to the controller: The Lt. Blue goes to the Blue, the Red/Tan goes to Black, the White goes to Red, the Black goes to White. From the truck pigtail the functions are: Lt. Blue-Brake, Red/Tan-12 volts, White-Stoplight, Black-Ground. On the controller, functions are: Blue-Brake, Black-Power, Red-Stoplight, White-Ground.

My wires were labelled. So check real careful
Teknosha controllers wire in real easy. Dumbo Dodge put a 40 amp fuse in the trailer brake power line. When it blows due to a trailer wire shorting out you lose ALL brakes on the trailer.
Bypass the fuse with a 20 amp breaker. This way you'll have brakes when it cools down. Each headlight has a breaker--they shoulda done the same with the brakes.
